7mm diesel fittings and general materials

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does any one know of good suppliers for 7mm loco fittings like sprung buffers, hoses and hooks etc ?.

Additionally I'm looking for a supplier of raw materials for scracth building some parts, specifically machined box setion, U setion and L section or flat bar etc.

Any pointers gratefully received

Cripes chaps, thats was quick, only just time to makle a cup 'o' tea.

I've actually got three MMP locos to build and its these I want to add bits to, I've not looked at the buffer beam fittings just yet but from others work have seen people changing bits for other lost wax brass parts. Are MMPs the best ? or are there others ?.

The raw materials are for the under floor which I want to add more depth and detail too and for re inforcing some areas I think might need it (my preference and no reflection on the kits).

I'll look over at Eileens in a moment.

Thanks for the speedy replies.

28Ten,

Agreed, except in the area under the floor over the bogies, MMPs type of construction leaves this area very flat, I wish to add the beams and box sections, pipework and sundries there in to give it a little more of a 3D feel, no reflection on the kits just want a little more depth in there, especially as my proposed layout will be viewed from quite low down and not gods eye view so to speak.

I'm prinitng the catalogue from Eileens, very comprehensive and thank you for the tip, sadly their brass dummy bolt heads are out of stock, something I will need to detail the pipe fittings in due course.

My oh my, now that is an exquisite collection. Just need to work out which sizes I need and get the bench cleared.

I do question my plans on occasion :) , rods and backs spring to mind, but 7mm allows you to go that extra little bit that 4mm never did.

Over the years lots of firms have made stuff that at the time was very good. I have some old OLEO's in stock and these are brilliant but lots of these firms disappear and the products then get lost which is a great shame. What we need is an on line directory of all this stuff unless sombody knows of one.

Pete Waterman might sell you bits of his JLTRT kits if you e-mailed and explained what you wanted

Hi,

I can only echo what others have already said. I have been collecting sections and sheet from Eileens for around 25 years and hardly go elsewhere but having said that, Metalsmith of Kettering is also a good supplier of milled brass sections and sheet.

If you are anywhere near the midlands, tomorrow is the start of the huge Model Engineering Exhibiton at the Warkwickshire Exhibition Centre for 5 days, so you might find something there also.smile.gif

Regards

Ian

Ian, sadly not, just ripped my calf muscle off my Achilles tendon so no work, walking, RHTT photographing, nothing but feet up and web surfing, otherwise I'd have been up there like a shot, though I do hope to make Warley at the NEC next month.

Until I begin cutting I'm not really sure exactly what sizes I'll need, brass sheet I can get at work as we use it to shim crane hoist motors for gearbox alignment, but more exotic pieces, milled or extruded will need to be procured, Eileens has a wealth of stuff and will probably cover most of the raw materials or new/replacement tools I need, though its not clear if their brass sections are milled or folded so I'll get hold of them tomorrow to ascertain that little question.

It'll be the specialist pieces that will cause problems, for example the 57/0 resin nose has cast tail lights, I've half a mind to replace the resin with sheet metal, but will need to source etched tail lamp fittings, the 56 will need to have its marker lights recessed so perhaps new fittings there also, I've not looked into how easy it is to adopt the ones in the kit from surface mount to recessed yet, its the little things really. other small items like pipe unions or small hand wheels will need sourcing. I am adept at CAD (Studio Max) so may have to end up making my own etch templates and getting them done by external specialists, though it is silly to have a dog and bark yourself, if you can get the parts elsewhere then I'm all for it and saving myself a lot of time and effort.

Paul is correct, some sort of basic spread sheet as to what can be got where would be helpful, especially loco fittings, there does seem to be some for steam locos but I've yet to find much written about diesels. I used to work in 4mm and those 3rd party suppliers are well documented, not only in adverts but in magazine workshops where the addon parts are listed, 7mm does not seem to have the same amount of coverage.

Thanks for all the input so far, very informative and useful in getting me back up to speed after a 12 year break.

Squires do all sorts of sections in both metal and plasticard and their catalogue is free, you could also try Metalsmith

Cheers

You might find a trip to Reading O gauge trade show in December worthwhile, just to see what is out there.

Yes, Reading is on the list as well, it was Warley last year that opened my eyes, its incredible how things have moved on in the intervening ten or so years. The thing that really dragged the train youth back out of me was the sound chips, as soon as I walked through the door I heard a class 20, cut right through the hubbub of hundreds of people, a sound one tends not to forget, I was convinced it was a DVD playing, until I saw a OO class 20 making the sound, that was it, hooked...again :). Anyway no point running before I can walk, those hurdles will come and pass later I'm sure.

The brass sections are milled, I wouldn't use them if they were folded!!!

Quite right too :).

Thanks, I will give them a look as well, Eileens only seem to go up to a maximum of 6mm in equal L or 8x2mm in unequal, I think I need at least 5x10mm for the main lower floor supports, the thickness is also not noted in their catalog, the scribbled list of questions for them gets longer :).

I didn't know Metalsmith did raw materials, I'd only looked at their tools, specifically rolling bars, none yet appear to be long enough to do a whole roof (14" with clearance) in one piece.

Plasticard will be very helpful with very small pieces which are easier to cut and form in plastic, and adhere to each other it has to be said.

I think metalsmith used to do longer ones to order. I made mine years ago so I never really paid much attention to what was on offer:lol:

The thought has crossed my mind, we have the machinery, materials and the skills here at work to make some up, I'm sure one of our skilled fitters would whizz up the raw pieces I cannot manage on a quite night shift for a crate of beer ;) , the only stumbling point I can see is the geared wheels at the end, if I may ask, what dia rollers did you opt for in the end ?, I'm thinking for a 14-16" set of rollers then 3/4" should suffice.

Best
