R317-070 motor noise!

Can anyone help me? My son is pestering me to make the R317-070 motor in an 80's Hornby diesel set run quietly. It has always been temperamental and slow, but it makes a terrible noise, although it does run. Occasionally is will run 2 yards or so near silently and quite fast, then it reverts to a sudden slower, high-pitch, grinding noisy setting.

Is this typical? I've cleaned an oiled it (from long-term storage). What could I do to rectify this? Thanks for your help.

The motor bearings tend to wear on these models and need more frequent lubrication than when they are new. A small amount of suitable grease on either end of the motor shaft may be best. A very common problem with these models. Thinner oils tend to last only a short amount of time before the screeching resumes. It is important that no oil or grease get on  the commutator behind the plastic cover plate as it will halt the model by getting between the brushes and the commutator so go sparingly.

Also if you place oil at both ends of the motor shaft move the armiture around.

The motor within the frame should have a small amount of play

Make the gear end you place oil between the brass bearing and the brass gear

if you do this after oiling it should help put oil into the bearings.
