Feltenham mk2

Hi all,

I thought id start up a little blog of my journey building my model railway 'feltenham'

I will say I don't have much experience in the field, so don't expect to see amazing things!! :D

Where to start....

The idea of the layout is to be a small starter project by myself, to get started and learn along the way the best practises and generally have fun with it!

Feltenham is a small branchline terminus in the southern region, lswr founded, and will with a few small scenic swaps, I.e posters and vehicles etc, will progress when finished per week into a new era, starting with 1930's southern, into 1940's, 50's, 60's etc all the way up to preservation at the end, I feel this way I can make use of a wider amount of stock and keep interest!!

Feltenham itself is a completely fictitious location, merging my hometown feltham, with my girlfriends, twickenham, and will act as a quiet station, with decent gaps between movements, so I can allow shunters to arrange wagons etc at the platform rather than solely in the goods yard. Also with this plan I can get away with keeping most of the era fittings and colorations as I'll imagine it generally wasn't bothered with in regards to updating in reality.

The size of the layout was aimed to be small, not only to fit into the room I'm using, but as that room will eventually hold a baby I'll have to be able to move it all out!!

I've added the initial track plan at the end of this note, however some parts have changed, mainly just track lengths and angle changes.

So let's get started!! :D

some recent images of the work in progress,

the engine shed isnt going to actually be part of the layout, it was just unfinished from the first attempt so figured id use it as a temp until i can come up with an lswr version!

you can see the variation between the initial plan and how the track has been laid now,

im thinking I may rebuild the coal stage, however im confused how they would actually function? is it a case of throwing the coal or some other long process??

I want to have the coal stage next to a water tower too, and reposition the buildings etc, at the further end of the shed is where the cleaning out of ash etc will take place, depending on which way the loco is facing, otherwise it'll be done at the inspection pit/coaling/watering area.

the bridge is scratch built, and im waiting to get some more clay to finish it off before stonework is scribed into it, and as can be seen ive started to terraform, im not going to complete the terraforming until ive got the backscene sorted, im going to use some of those photographic ones.

almost forgot, im only using one of the signal boxes obviously, just cant decide which yet!!

Had some more alterations with the plan above!! As you can see in the pics the loco shed is in a different position now, and what I planned purely to be a coal merchant siding next to it will now hold the cattle pen and provender shed as I was having fits trying to decide where the sore thumb stuck out!! The goods shed siding will remain the same, however i might tweek the angles of it so it's not all cramped up!! So fingers cross it'll work out okay! Otherwise I'm being rid of the idea of stupid cows :/

Tme for todays update!

I've laid out and cut the trackwork to size on the other board now, had some fun with this after with some wagons etc arranging them and as a result have managed to sort out where buildings will go in regards to sidings etc,

there will be two sidings as per the original plan on the station side, one for a goods yard the other for a cattle dock & feed merchant.

the other siding by the engine shed will now be the siding for the coal merchant and crane for unloading of heavier goods as space by the goods yard will be a bit restricted!

Ive started the first layer of the papier mache, only to discover later i didnt mix enough glue into the mix and found i just had loose paper formed into a hill! this has been resolved now by spraying the same glue i fix ballast down with so it better work this time!!

I had a little play around with where some buildings will be by the engine shed, not convinced the water tower looks lswr/sr though so might scratch build one. Im aiming that the area looks similar to the stage at swanage shed, without the turntable as i didnt want to spend £200 odd on a 50ft turntable!!

the electrics for the shed side board rails have been done, all hidden! one under the bridge, in the shed and on the siding where the buffer stop will sit.

so there we go! all in a days work so far, doesnt look like much but meh, its getting there :D

Hi all,

its been awhile since ive uploaded anything! mainly because not much has been happening, other tha some scenics,

so far ive done some of the base flocking on the hillsides, this will later have static grass applied.

the roadway, if you want to call it that, for the siding has been laid, this was just fine ballast with sand, and some of the ballast used for the track in moderation, followed by a basecoat of a tub of housepaint i find laying around which i experimented with, and was quite happy for a base colour!

ive also started some of the blackening around the engine shed, this will later have some weathering powders applied for a variance in tone! a bit too black at the moment.

ive also started work on the perimeter fence, as everyone else says, it was a nightmare to build! let alone try to paint, i think it came out okay.

so yeah thats all thats new since the last update! im trying to get the basics done for one board as I cant afford to get the cobalts i need for the other board! so it will wait for now.

enjoy :D
