Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
Evenin' all, Motive Power preparations for this weekends steam gala at the CVR can be seen here The railmotor and 6046 were in steam, whilst 34007 was being shunted by the ex NCB 0-6-0 & 69621 was standing outside the shed. 33102 hauled 6046 towards Leekbrook whilst 33021 was in action as station pilot. Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
....and here are a few clips from todays gala day We managed to achieve all that we had set out to do today but this preserved railway has to minimise/eliminate the severe and repeated delays which dog their galas. Each person that we spoke with complained of similar issues on each visit which they had made to this line. WC Pacific 34007 Wadebridge, the steam railmotor No 93, N7 69621 & S160 6046 are the main line performers whilst the small saddle tank is a Foxfield loco recently maintained here. We took the grandchildren last year to the Peppa Pig event. It wasn't a good experience due to poor organisation, trying to find somewhere to park, crowded or delayed trains, non-functioning toilets, etc,etc,..... The expectation of the paying public these days is much higher than the early days of preservation. These railways are now looked on as part of the 'entertainment industry' and have a large amount of competition so need to get their act together if they want repeat visits. It only takes a few disgruntled parents to tell their friends it wasn't a good day to lose a large number of potential paying customers. Torr Giffard LSWR 1951-71
...the obvious solution to the train running delays is to provide loco watering facilities at Leekbrook jnc so that trains in either direction can water whilst waiting to pass each other (test the idea with a road tanker/pump first). This avoids the double delay effect of late running services (often with more than one loco) causing yet more delays whilst watering at non-passing points. As for the issues which Eric describes above there is an obvious lack of preparation/planning for such events. Dave
