Langton's Retreat - a beginners style layout

Hi

The idea behind Langton's Retreat was to make a layout that could be someones first. So it is made using a Hornby starter set, with a standard controller, and set-track. It is only 6x4ft, a single loop with two sidings.

Then to keep things simple I have made it on insulation board surrounded by a wooden frame with batons underneath that also hold a table in position underneath. This makes it very lightweight and quiet as well.

I use ballasted foam to keep it simple but this also meant I had laid the track and ballasted it in under 2 hours. It is very quiet indeed, and smooth-running.

I am adding a lake and tunnel, buildings and a station. Typical things for a first layout.

I hope it is of interest. I am making it now, and this post is part-way through the process. This is not to show the only way to make a layout but rather just one way. I am trying to keep things simple, so that is the design philosophy.

Here is the web page for it: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/calvertfilm/Calverton7.htm

And here is the first video:

I hope this is of use, especially to beginners.

Regards,

Laurie
