Garethp8873
A few days ago I was sent this photo of a Midland Railway Van in SR livery. Is this actually prototypical or not as I would certainly like to replicate this in OO form if it is the case. Many thanks! Garethp8873.
TonyA
It may be a coincidence but 47006 falls within the range of numbers for WD 4-wheel box vans in the 1956 series, 47000-47999, which included some ex-Midland vans. However, I cannot find any details of WD 47006 at the moment. Tony
bbishop
Various railways acquired or adapted Midland Railway vans. This includes the M&SWJR (aka Somerset & Dorset), but their vans had cupboard doors. Some of them became LSWR stock in the first disposal of M&SWJR stock and became SR stock in 1923. I rebuilt the relevant Slaters van in 7mm. Bill

MR built ex SDJR vans are shown in Southern wagons Vol 1 but not the type with the sliding door
RMweb Premium petethemole Posted April 17, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 17, 2014 According to Southern Wagons Pictorial the Isle of Wight Central had some ex-MR and ex-GER vans that were allocated SR numbers in the 47000 series but they were never carried. 47006 is within the sequence but not on the list as used. A case of modeller's licence perhaps? Pete
IWCR
Yes 47006 was an IOW series number allocated to an ex IWCR van amongst which there were a number of ex Midland Railway examples. Certainly some of these lasted long enough for a Southern Railway repaint, the final survivors going in the 1930's. Which vehicles actually carried SR livery is not 100% known and would rely to some extent on photographs. Another survivor was an Ex Midland Goods Brake (as per the Slaters kit), this was IWCR 5, becoming SR 56037, then being rebuilt with a second balcony in 1930 for continued use. The longest in use was a Midland Railway crane purchased in 1911, (built mid c1860's). This was rebuilt with a steel jib in 1920. Becoming SR 429S, it then remaining in service until 1967. Now preserved at Havenstreet. Pete
