Earl Bathurst
Good evening Whist on the train this week noticed a lot of work taking place at the sidings near Swansea high street station where some HST are stabled at night and the post office train was stored for a long time. There are a lot of track panels along with parts to make a point around this area. Does anyone have any idea what is happening there? Scott
simon47603
The sidings are Maliphant Street Carriage Sidings. A new depot is to be built here for the new Hitachi Super Express Trains, which will run on the GWML when it is electrified in a few years time. br2975
The original plan to electrify the South Wales main line ended at Cardiff, and dual-mode units were mooted i.e. electric traction from Padd-Cardiff, then diesel mode from Cardiff - Swansea. The proposed depot was to be sited at Tidal Sidings, Cardiff. . With the WAG agreeing to contribute towards the electrification west ward from Cardiff - Swansea, a depot was proposed for Maliphant carriage sidings, Swansea. . There is a lot of work being undertaken in South Wales at the moment to take advantage of (i) Cardiff area improvements on the Valley Lines (ii) the South Wales re-signalling scheme, and (iii) the SWML electrification, and (iv) the electrification of the valleys network. .
