D29 Brake Thirds

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

On Sunday, I bought a copy of the September 1952 MRN, for a drawing of the said D29 Brake Thirds, and have just identified it as a D29 from the given numbers cross referenced to Harris' "Great Western Coaches from 1890". However, this throws up an anomoly. His Lot list shews:

Diagram D29, Lot 923, Dated 07/10/1899, numbers 3301 - 3310 and Diagram D29, Lot 1009, dated 10/01/1903, numbered 3305.

Now, the question is with regards to Number 3305, should Lot 923 read 3301 - 3304 and 3306 - 3310, or was the original 3305 of 1899 replaced by the3 later one of 1903?

Additionally, this drawing and article, by J. E. D. Binney is given as No 16. Does anyone have a list of the other drawings in the series?

I would guess that 3305 was written off and replaced by a new build. I doubt if they would have left a gap in the numbering.

Edit: I thought it might have been the brake third destroyed at Slough (16 June 1900), but that was 3390, according to the report.

Answering my own post. I cross-posted the query on the GWR e-list, and the redoubtable John Lewis replied thus:

According to the Register, the original 3305 was altered to composite 714 (6714) on 20 th June 1902. In this form it had 2 x 1st compartments 1 x 2nd and 1 x 3rd plus 1 lavatory 1 luggage and 1 guard's compartments. It reverted to a brake third numbered 3733 on 25 May 1912. It lasted until 1 April 1939.

The 1903 build 3305 was a replacement. It was given electric light Oct 1929 and lasted until 6 Sep 1947.
