Barnt Green in the 50s & 60s

Hmm It has been a while since I posted anything on here. That doesn't mean I have been nothing has been going on however. Despite the conditions in the garage over the Christmas break (there's a small gap either side of the window so very cold and draughty! Damn cowboy builders!) I've done more track laying and have finished all track laying on the scenic side of the layout now. The line side hut is now almost finished as well, just a bit more painting and adding the chimney for the stove. Unfortunately I forgot to take any pictures of the hut but I painted all of the bricks grey then wiped off most of it leaving some in the lines for the mortar then painted the door green as per the picture on the previous page.

Here is where the goods shed will go, having wondered about how to get/make a building that only appeared in the background of pictures, I realised I already have a old Jouef goods shed that looked very similar in end profile. It was quite grubby and had been taken apart for cleaning and painting by the time this picture was taken, while I was testing clearances before the glue dried !

I've also been pondering the layout of the fiddle yard at the back. I was going to go for a cassette system but I've decided to just use the points I've got instead so I can get stuff running quicker then possibly change it later. 6 roads, one of which is reversible for the local trains I plan to terminate in what are in reality the main line platforms. the black line represents where a couple of points will go to give a crossover back to the up line for a bit more flexibility.

I've come home for the Easter break now and have started work on the layout again and before I knew it a pretty significant milestone had been reached, I've finished all of the track laying ! Here's the newly laid fiddle yard with a peak and some stanier coaches checking clearances, plus my new Hornby railroad sound class 40, which I bought for £55 !!  :yahoo:

Hi Sam,

While not my prototype, this looks excellent!

I am not quite at your level of schooling (3 more years of high school for me :(, then Uni), however I know exactly what it is like trying to get modelling done around assignments etc. Can't wait to see it progress.

Regards,

Peter

Can't believe I've not updated this since April ! A few things have been going on amongst my studies, while at uni I made a start on a few of the signals for the layout, namely the Platform 1 starter, the platform 4 starter and the down slow's junction signal.

I've also done most of the wiring over the summer, all of the track feeds are in place and now i just need to make a small circuit board to add some switches and so I can have just two wires going to the controller rather than the current 18 !

(They weren't all plugged in when this pic was taken)

Then of course came extensive "testing" before the next stage.

I painted the track using a spray can of Humbrol matt 29 dark earth, it might be a bit too light, but it's a lot better than it was.

And finally just a few days before returning to sheffield I did a bit of ballasting, quite pleased at the result, the picture makes it look worse than it is.
