Prototypical Track Plans

Recommended Posts

I am attempting to source maps or plans showing the track layout of particular prototype locations. Of course, such plans appear in many books but not necessarily of the appropriate location. Old OS maps can show track layouts pretty well - I have a wonderful 1:500 map of Humber Dock in Hull which shows wagon turntables and even mooring posts - and there are, I know, original railway plans extant, especially where modification works have been carried out, but what is the best way to source this information?

I've tried Old Maps but find it a very user-unfriendly site.

Any suggestions?

Ian

Various museums contain detailed plans prepared by the railways themselves. Also the National Archives at Kew has plans. It would be helpful if you could indicate which geographical area you are interested in and then I may be able to give more specific guidance.
