msb12
Hi all Any recommendations for the best irons to use for soldering droppers to 7mm track (wattage, temperature controlled, tip size, etc)? I've tried my 25w Xytronic with a small tip and Carr's speedy solder, but it doesn't feel up to the job of making reliable joints on a consistent basis. I'm using a fairly standard approach - stranded wire, pre-twisted and tinned, folded at the end to create a small 'foot' to attach to the underside of the rail (also pre-tinned). Any suggestions would be very welcome!
3 link
With 7mm rail being nearly twice the size of 4mm track the rail itself becomes a massive heat sink, so you could try a larger tip but you might have to go for a larger iron. I use a temperature controlled iron and I run it at 360 deg to solder on my droppers. A bigger iron would be better for instant heat, as if you let the iron dwell to long on one area you will start melting the chairs . ATB, Martyn. puddlejumper
I use either 40 or 50 watt iron when doing this sort of job, plenty of flux, tin the wire and then hold it where you want it connecting. Quick in & out with the iron & bob is your mothers brother
