Edge
Hi guys, I'm starting a new project and was wondering if I could prevail upon you all to provide me with some pictures of the Ffestiniog Double Fairlie locomotives. I've been to the FR about ten times myself but I never seem to be able to take a decent shot of one . I will be trying again on the weekend of Superpower, but it never hurts to ask around. Thanks very much Edge

Froxfield2012
Depends on what period you might want to model? Here are one or two archive pictures. The first is from 1962, when I seem to recall that Merddin Emrys was painted a dark reddish colour. The second is Merddin Emrys in 1963, by which time a cab had been added. And the third, colour image, dates from the late 1970s.

RMweb Premium Andy Kirkham Posted September 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 1, 2014 Depends on what period you might want to model? Here are one or two archive pictures. And the third, colour image, dates from the late 1970s. An informative series of pictures that shows the utilitarian attitude of the FfR regime of that era towards its historic equipment. A once elegant Victorian machine transformed into an ugly, angular caricature of its former self. I guess money was tight and serviceable locos few in those days so desperate measures were necessary to keep the service running. Happily the wheel has now turned full circle: heritage is now valued and Merddyn has been restored to its Victorian form.
RMweb Gold ngtrains.com Posted September 1, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 1, 2014 ******Merddyn******** If you have so much interest in the loco's you could at least get its bl@@dy name right. There is no faux welsh in its name and its quite clearly written on the side of it. and unlike the others its the same on the other side Merddin Emrys, dating from 1879 was named before there was felt to be any need for ingratiating namings for royalty and dead prime ministers and for the use of faux welsh names to preserve holiday cottages. Even the class 47 named after it by Tinsley depot which went for faux welsh on their version spelt it differently to you Merddin Emrys is the oldest and the best. (I am biased having just spent two weeks driving it)

sleeper
I'm not sure if this is stricktly legal as there might be copyright issues involved here but here's three pictures for a start. I needed photos when I did my own Fairlie project and I found several online, you just need to search. Wikipedia is a good start, I can't remember now where the others came from, you just need to search. Best of luck with your project, be sure to post your progress on here. There's a link to my blog below if you troll down through it you'll find a link to my project, you might benefit from my experiences good and bad! EddieB
Talking of "ugly, angular caricatures", I see there are no pictures of "the new Earl" on this thread. I find it (he?) appears rather better in b&w photos than it did at the time, but the angular lines would hardly please a double-Fairlie "purist". To rectify the omission, here are three shots from September 1979 (Penrhyndeudraeth, Dduallt and Porthmadog, respectively) when I was otherwise mapping the rocks of the Penrhyndeudraeth area. The "new" loco had entered service in July of that year, and I had managed to travel on the return leg of its maiden passenger service.
