Locomotive and kit construction at Missenden Abbey

There are two weekend courses on locomotive and kit construction for all scales at Missenden Abbey from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th October tutored by Tony Gee and Kevin Wilson.  This is one of several areas of modelling available at the Autumn Weekend of the Missenden Abbey Railway Modellers.  Tony Gee is a very experienced EM modeller who is now the custodian of Peter Denny's Buckingham.  Tony's group is for the smaller scales, 2mm to 4mm.  Kevin Wilson, whose O Gauge layout Bucks Hill may be known to you and many people saw at Railex in 2013, will deal with the larger gauges.  We leave it to the S scale modellers to choose where they would like to go!

Also on offer is course on the practical side of 3D printing, which is limited to 8 places.  Details can be found on the 3D Printing page of the Railway Modellers' website.  If you are interested solely in the 3D printing, please check with me that a place is available before booking.

Other areas on offer with no number limits are sceneryairbrushing and weathering and electronics.  For the latter there is a course for the complete beginner (The Bewildered) that explains the basics, another for those with a working knowledge (Initiates) which includes matters DCC, and a third for more advanced train control which involves CBUS and is tutored by Mike Bolton who developed the system.

Details of all the courses available in the Autumn Weekend this October and the Spring Weekend on 6th to 8th March 2015 are on the Missenden Railway Modellers' website.  Although billed as residential, if you live close enough to come in each day you still get lunch and dinner but pay a reduced fee.

I will be happy to answer any questions.  Contact me via the website or a PM.  If any of you are coming to Scaleforum (27th & 28th September), the Railway Modellers have a stand and will be very pleased to chat with you.

It's worth pointing out that, while most modellers will be following one particular course, everyone is welcome to look in on other groups to see what's going on and to ask any questions they might have. For instance, someone on one of the loco-building courses might want to find out more about DCC or weathering while a scenic modeller might want a quick half-hour tutorial on soldering technique. All permutations are possible and there will be a programme of various practical demonstrations over the weekend.

Remember too that if you live within travelling distance, you don't need to stay overnight at Missenden Abbey. We offer a reduced rate, including lunch, for non-residents.

We will be at Scaleforum this coming weekend, so come for a chat and ask questions if you are going there.

David
