I didn't quite know where to put this, it is not directly related to 3d printing, but obviously could have applications there, but it allows map terrain to be produced as an STL file that can be viewed or manipulated in other software.

 

The Terrain2STL STL Generator, was created by GitHub user “ThatcherC” and provides a simple method of generating STL files for arbitrary landscapes. You simply browse around a Google map and select the zone you’d like to have STL’d.
