Avionyx
Hi Guys, Just trying to refurb my son's favourite loco, a Hornby Class 08. The drive gear teeth have been stripped entirely and I've got a replacement but I can't for the life of me work out how to get these wheels apart (they are off the loco) to replace the cog. I have been told by someone that a tool is needed to remove the pin and that this isn't commonly available but I find it hard to believe that there isn't a way of doing this in a hobby so full of ingenuity and enthusiasm. Was rather hoping to have this done for him by the time he gets home from school - any and all help appreciated! Alex
34theletterbetweenB&D
You are looking for a wheel puller. But you don't need that. A piece of 3mm/eighth inch thick mild steel with a slot in it to take the axle. Support over the open jaws of a bench vice, tap the axle end through the wheel with a drift (an iron nail slightly smaller in diameter than the axle is all you need). Before knocking the axle out, scribe an index over axle end and wheel boss, to enable precise reassembly wit the wheelset correctly quartered .
