Ashburton Station Under Threat

How many modellers have built layouts based on Ashburton?.

Below is some information from the Friends of Ashburton Station web page

We are currently campaigning to safeguard the future of Ashburton Station, a historic Great Western Railway branch line terminus located in South Devon.

The station is a unique Brunelian structure, an important survivor of a bygone age. Initially revived as part of the current South Devon Railway, Ashburton was severed from the remainder of the steam railway in 1971 by the building of a trunk road.

The site is now under imminent threat of redevelopment.

We believe the station site is a historic asset of the town, and has potential to be exploited for the education, learning and enjoyment of future generations – perhaps as a railway terminus once again.

Our immediate aims are to safeguard the former Ashburton Station site, to protect the surviving railway infrastructure and ensure that any future development of the site does not compromise its heritage potential. We also aim to protect the original formation of the line from the station to Pear Tree Cross.

In the longer term, we aim to support the use of the site for the celebration of its heritage.
