The further adventures of Brackhampton in laser printing land

Recommended Posts

I've decided to start a separate thread to upolad my 3D designs for my layout. You may have seen the victorian office building on here, and the Great Western Arcade on my blog, well today I've been bashing out another old Leeds building. This one, unlike so many of my models is still standing. Its formallt known as St Andrews Chambers, and stands at the top of Park Row in the city. On my layout, its going to poase as the Magistrates' Courts. I've got a Walthers Union Station to kit bash into the local Assize court (the Crown Court since 1970's). I'm going to add some lions to this and give it a limited flavour of Leeds Town Hall.

Anway here are the designs so far - and yes I now it still nees a door adding. Since drawing this up, I've lost the basement area. This will more cheaply and quite easily knocked up from plasticard.

Another weekend and another Leeds building created in SketchUp. This is Ramsdens, which used to stand in Park Row.

Its not the famous Harry Ramsdens, but the rather less famous Archibald Ramsdens Piano Emporium. A plan of the facade was found on Archiseek, an Irish website with a wealth of old victorian plans of buildings long gone or still extant.

Still to sketch out is the staircase stack to the side which gave access to the upper floor offices. I also need to decide whether to print out at this size or scale it down. The dotted lines show the ceiling heights which I estmate at 15ft, 10ft and 10ft.

Some more doodling and another lost Leeds building. This one I've always had a soft spot for and only wish it had survived. Its an early use of external cast iron. All the exterior structure is cast iron and glass, designed look like tudor/gothic and built this way to utilise the space to the maximum as the owner didn't even want to waste the nine inches that traditional brick and masonry would have taken up.

The building lost the balcony at some point and the crockets and railings along the top went to. Finally the whole thing was demolished to make way for the Bond Street Centre. Had it survived it would surely have been listed. I'm only surprised its not better known. The original stood on the corner of Boar Land and Lower Basinghall St in the city.

heres the architects sketch of the original

and here is a sketchup design for one side.

My intention is to glue the laserprinted sides to thick clear plasticard, which will give the required strength. because the side is only about 5mm thick, it should be possible to print in FUD and thus not lose any detail. additional details will be added with etched brass from scalelink etc

Further playing has produced the three sides (the other two being presumably plain brick).

Here there are in order.

overall height is about 185mm and each bay is about 20mm wide. it doesn't make for a very large foortprint, but the effect should be good so long as they print ok. because of the thickness (or should that be thinness) the price in FUD is not prohibitive and so I'm hoping to print them in this - perhaps after the next pay day.

The print of the Great Western Arcade facade arrived today and here for your delectation and delight is the very item. Again its had a spray of light stone colour just to bring out the detail. Theres one or two minor print issues but I think I know what caused them and they don't detract from the overall product.

the car and bus in the photos give an idea of the scale.

Once its been suitably weathered down the detail should stand out even more.

I'm going to have to use milliput to give some indication of the surface carving (such as over the arcade entrance).

I've also been having a bit of fun trying to mock uo the proposed Assize Courts. This is based around the Walthers Union station which provides the basic shell. Its been raised up on a basement area and given a more prominent portico. I'll be doing most of this in thick plasticard and probably printing the columns. the four plinths at the front will take some dolls house lions (a la Leeds Town Hall). The original kit parts are highlighted in the light tan colour

And yes another lost building from Park Row in Leeds

The Sun Life Insurance building. - the sun on the front actually had a smily face(!)

I'm considering adding the mortar lines on this one, although as the original building was soot black by the time it was demolished they probably wouldn't have been seen.

Two more lost buildings of Leeds.

This first is the National Provincial Bank of England and the original stood at the end of Park Row just as it opened into City Square. The drawing is based on architects drawings lodged with the City Archive. The building as built differed slightly from that shown having one less floor. Again I have few photos of this building and I can't decide whether it was all stone construction or stone and brick. My suspicion is that the first and second floors were mainly brick with stone dressings. I've had mixed results when providing for mortar lines on 3D prints. My inclination is to miss them off most stone work. If I plump for stone and brick upper floors I think that I will draw in the dressings round the windows etc and then recess the walls by 0.7 mm to allow for embossed plasticard to be glued on.

This next one is a work in progres and represents the old Hand in Hand Insurnace building which stood between the Sun Life building and Ramsden's piano emporium (see above). Its drawn up from a decent photo on Aviva's website (history pages) I could probably get the plans from the City archive but I'm not in Leeds as much as I used to be. Stil some detailing work to do including the tops to some of the columns and the sculpture work over the door. I am concerned that the lettering may not be printable as done  - one way to resolve this would be to make the balustrade at the top solid (like the central "IN" portion). I don't think this would harm the impact of the model.

Im thinking a nice run of these buildings in low relief along the city cenre portion of my layout should look very impressive.

nice designs. Sketchup looks like a good tool to design buildings, which is not really surprising given what it was developed for. Printing in FUD is not a cheap option, and I still prefer a rougher surface for buildings, especially if it means I can afford it. That Irish website sounds like it is worth checking out.

Hugely impressive and I can imagine very rewarding to see the hard work put into your cad drawings turned into something solid and tangible and possibly the most important thing. Something very unique to yourself and your layout.

Good work fella!!!!!

Shall look forward to reading more about your project.
