Claude's Australian Adventure

I have just returned from a two-week holiday in Australia - my first time south of the equator. It was a great couple of weeks - good weather and fantastic food.

Our trip covered five locations; Melbourne, Alice Springs, Ayres Rock, Cairns and Sydney. Although not a railway trip, I was able to grab a few passing pictures

Melbourne:

There still looks to be a decent amount of loco-hauled stuff around Melbourne - also just outside of Southern Cross station are the loco stabling sidings, mainly containing N Class locos.

Also present was this rather tatty-looking shunter.

Alice Springs:

Not a great deal to report from Alice Springs, apart from a number of Kangaroos (plus joey) near the overland telegraph station museum. The station has a mixture of freight wagons scattered around the vicinity, but no sign of the famed 'Ghan' - picked the wrong day to visit methinks. Of interest was this plinthed loco - a remnant of the old narrow gauge line to Alice.

Cairns:

Whilst at Cairns, we had a day trip to Kuranda...which included a trip on the Kuranda railway; a pretty spectacular journey down the mountainside.

Sydney:

A couple of pictures of the Sydney metro...

Ah, the ubiquitous T-set/Tangara! (in the shots from Sydney)

Some of the unidentified stuff is a NSU Class-NSU 53 ('The Old Ghan Train') and a Y class shunter (number unknown). Those from Vic will be able to help with identity

I thought that you had gone rather quiet on here. Some great shots. It's certainly changed since I was last there but Kuranda looks much the same. A superb ride.

We did the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs done years ago and found it very underwhelming both I scenery and very basic service for seated passengers.

Ought to go back and visit relatives in Melbourne soon.

So can we expect an Australian N scale layout in addition to the Japanese one?
