A Quickie for a Wet Afternoon or The Three Train Trick

Foiled by inclement weather today, so the Grandsons came over and we had a play in the workroom.

We made up a shunting puzzle consisting of three trains in four sidings, two each side with back to back points in the centre. The sidings have 21" clear standage. The capacity can be seen from the pictures.

The object was to get the three trains sorted with the engines finishing in the same positions as at the start.

Our best effort was 23 moves. Any offers for a lower total.

Just to clarify our rules, the start and finish positions they are

Start

Wagon 2-Loco 1                                          Loco 2-Parcels 2-Coach

Wagon 3-Wagon 1                                       Loco 3-Parcels 1

Finish

Wagon 3-Wagon 2-Wagon 1-Loco 1           Loco 2-Parcels 1-Parcels 2

                                                                     Loco 3-Coach

During shunting only one loco is allowed in any one siding at a time, i.e. the next move is always into the siding without a loco in it.

If I were doing this in the real world I reckon about 14 moves would cover it, using the model railway rules I think 23 was my best as well without cheating, although things were complicated somewhat by doing this in Train Simulator rather than on a model railway layout.
