RMweb Premium Dalesman Posted January 12, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 12, 2015 Recently, both NS and CSX have been rebuilding their EMD SD40-2 to give a longer life and more up to date systems. Having seen an NS one at Cleveland in July 2014 and a CSX at Dolton, IL in 2012, I thought about how to go about recreating them in HO scale. I found two seperate projects on Shapeways website that fitted the bill, so I took the plunge and ordered one of each. at roughly £27 they are not cheap but are definitely a time effective way and are ro bust. Attached are two shots of the cabs in the raw. Over the next few months I plan to update this thread with progress shots. The donor locos will be Kato SD40-2s obtained for a reasonable price (£50 each from Anoraks Anonymous). The CSX SD40-3 was designed by 3RDBOXCAR of this locale! The quality of the 3D printed cabs is good with very little stratification from the way they are laid down in the factory. The thickness of the walls is excellent, about what you would get from a Cannon & Co kit. The profile and proportions look right for both and the level of detail is good, with Sinclair antennae on the CSX SD40-3 cab roof and fine steps on the back door of the NS cab. Watch this space! RMweb Premium Dalesman Posted February 13, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 13, 2015 The rather cruel shot attached shows that progress has been made, taken three weeks or so ago of the cab fitted to the Kato donor loco. a bit more fettling was needed to smooth the cabside down. Since then, the shell has been primed and painted with decals almost complete apart from a set of NS "horsehead" logos for the flanks. It has become NS 3213 as that best fits the detail variations. After the final decals are done, a coat of satin varnish and some light weathering should finish the bodywork. Just the glazing and DCC fitting to do after that! Have occasionally thought about such projects and figured the truck could be turned end-for-end, but that would then make for some excessive uni/sleeve/uniy offsets as the mech turned round corners...
