GWR Branch Line Junction small layout Build

A new start building a layout Up side down

Well we are from the Big Land Down Under.

My Friend has recently had the opportunity to start again with a new layout, after several small round and round layouts in a odd shaped small room that didn't have the opperation that he wanted and still have space to access the room easly as you will see it is also not your standard 4 cornered room.

His occupation dosn't allow him much time to do modelling.

He also decided to take the plunge and go DCC.

New layout requirements.

Must be GWR style.

Have station with small yard with a possible bay platform for Banana Railcar or 14xx & auto trailer

The turnaround tray / fiddle yard will only fit a B coach set and a small loco so find a way we could include opperation of up to 4 coach train and tender loco.

Some sort of Naval or Military siding.

So with a two day leave available and the layout boards in place and waiting we set about getting some track down.

post-14985-0-39609100-1424608244.jpg

With a very generic GWR plan drawn up, Track was placed and evaluated to see if it worked as you can see the area for the station is not your average rectangular board to maximise this space curved points were selected for the station approach.

With Track laid out we found that we could create enough length to be able to run a round 4 passanger coaches.

We then found we could get 2 storage tracks as hidden storage along the section between the station and turn around tray so the decision was made that this would be a junction terminus station.

Track and points locations marked to allow for point motor rods holes to be drilled before track affixed

Checking if it will all work?

Track is laid on cork except the goods yard area this was placed directly on the ply as it is intended to infill a lot of the track in this area and also presented a slightly different level so the scene would not be so uniform.

To get some extra length in the space avalable it was decided to continue one of the goods sidings behind the goods shed and this track will be Infilled Perspex will be used to protect items from a trip to the floor as it is also very close to the edge.

Whilst working out the bay platform it was decided to have a small loco facility for locos to be service and the local train loco to be stabled

The bay platform was decided to be at an angle from the main platform to enable a scenic feature of a platform garden in the middle of the A formation of the platform.

A engine shed road was positioned off this bay platform road.

So after only a small amount of time spent over 2 afternoons we had a main station track layout down and we were out of time so a clean up and a few final photos with bits of old station platform form the old layout to set the scene plus some of the buildings in place we called it and we will have to wait a bit to do some more of the line around the corner with junction and the Navy or Military siding then we will start on the wiring.

Edit Although it looks like the track is just on the ply board all but the 2 yard tracks are on cork underlay.

I hope this little layout will become a "Model Railway" as we progress with the build.

It may not be all as quick as this first flurry of work laying the main station but we took advantage of the time and got stuck in.

Hope RMWeb members find some interest in this layout build.

Looking good so far. Really like the way that you have used an odd-shaped space.

Might be a bit noisy with track fixed direct to ply.

Hi Joseph thanks for the comments.

Noise won't be a problem in the yard and this will be Infilled to ráil hight that's the reason for laying on the ply good firm base to start before in fill and we also have the weigh bridge it would have been floating if we put on cork

Plus we wanted a variation in the track level for scenic interest and this worked out to be the best way to do.

It's only about 3foot of yard track and we won't be doing speed trials in the yard slow moving shunts only.

The rest of the layout is on cork so only the hollow sound you get from that.

The branch line speeds will limit noise anyway as you can't go to fast there's not enough length in the line, its fiddle yard to station.

The rest of the space will have a Town scene with possibly a war memorial in a village green

If the branch leads into the bay could you 1) make the platform a little longer-a van's length would help if you can't fit an extra coach and 2) try to separate the routes branch-bay and main-platform so that you can have simultaneous arrivals/departures?

In my view nothing looks better than one train being overtaken by another.

Hi

Thought about the duel track leaving but not enough space for points to be able to access both goods yard and platforms for both the branch and the main and still be able to runaround 4 passanger coaches

The bay track is long enough for a Banana and van or extra coach or 14 xx Auto trailer and space for say a horse box we actually shortened the lenght to be able to put in an access way to the station building when we get to the scenic's

Great pics Chris! Now we'll have to plan some lessons on operation for Richard :)

Thanks Ian

Yes we will have to do some opperation planning the layout will be able to have several combinations with a 2 track main line train storage able to fit 4 passanger cars and a large tender Loco on each and one of Gary's turnaround trays 4 track for the branch line that can fit a GWR B set and small loco like a 45xx 2-6-2.

Layout can at a minimum have 7 trains ready to go 6 in storage and a Auto train or Flying Banana waiting in the bay plus a loco in the engine shed ready to use as a shunter or branch line train loco so plenty of scope and it is going to be DCC so no restrictions in movements on the layout sections etc should be interesting when we get something running we will be trying for the scheduled meeting, at least having trains running.

Hi Ian

With a bit of luck the turnaround Tray will be ready by then and we can run a small program of trains

Richard was going to do a bit more work on his days off.

Quick vid of train moving the milestone moment first time DCC for Richard and it's been a few years since Richard had a layout up and running in his train room.

Long video low quality wouldn't load at full HD ??

The little loco stopped on one of the dead frog point a reused item of the older style Peco range we will try Ian's idea of the conductive paint from another post in the micro layout section and see if it works.

Short video is HD

PS--- Has any one had a issue with the Electrotren TVR saddle tank loco this one has a motor issue that occurred after a few Minutes of running (suspected To be related to the brushes) it turns out that the relation ship between the manufacture and the suplier of these models has ceased and their are no direct contacts for parts or checking with the manufacture the UK shop that sold the loco to Richard is looking into for us

  • 2 weeks later...

Another GWR branch layout I am look forward to see progress on.

If it's not to late would it not be more suitable to have the shed facilities come off the bay in the other direction, similar to the one at Kingsbridge.

This would cut down the amount of movements loco crews would have to make to get the loco on shed. I have adapted one of your pictures to show you what it might look like. Hope you don't mind the suggestion.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the Idea, will have a look at next time we get a chance to do some modelling may be a stretch too far as the village green with a memorial in the middle and village street scene need to go in that odd shape area but we may be able to rework??
