Multiple identity account
Hi,I've started to like a certain DEMU that runs in my region and thought of modelling it in 1:101 scale. Whilst the majority of the power car and coach is easy to model, the cab is pretty complex. I use SketchUp so I was wondering if any of the guys here who are quite proficient in SketchUp may have some word of advice to help me out.Posted pics below.....Cheers!J. Rabs
Here's the method I would use for this. Obviously I've just done this very roughly but I hope it helps! 1) Draw the profile of the carriage and make it a group 2) Draw the side profile of the cab and extrude this through width of the carriage. Make sure that it goes beyond the carriage on all sides 3) Explode the groups and select all. Then intersect all 4) Select and remove all the unwanted faces 5) Select and remove the unwanted intersection edges 6) Draw a circle on the curved front face (in sketchup the circle tool is always a tangent to the curved surface underneath, so it gives a convenient drawing surface for the next step) 7) Draw the outline of the bulge above the cab 8 and 8a) Extrude this out and delete the unwanted bits of the circle. Then move this part out by a distance (note the distance that you move) 8b) Rotate this extrusion to horizontal - take a note of the angle you move it through. 8c) select the front face and rotate it back by the same angle 8d) move the axes to align to this tilted front face 8e) use the scale tool to stretch the front face back to the correct height (I added a construction line so that the tool snapped to the correct height) 9) Make this part a group and move it back into position on the main model by moving it back by the same amount as you moved it out earlier. 10) Select the carriage an intersect to model. Then double click the group to open it, select all and also intersect model. Move the group a known distance away 11) Explode the group and delete all the unwanted bits 12) Move the bulge back into place 13) Make everything a group and then draw a rectangle through the front of the carriage at a place where you know the profile of the front scallops (if you have a photo from dead ahead this could be the buffer beam, I chose a random position) 14) Intersect the rectangle with the model, then move this out by a known amount 15) Add the scallop profile 16) Sweep or extrude these forward and back. Stretch, skew or rotate these as necessary to give the correct shape Make sure that the shapes fully cut the surface 17) Remove all the unwanted bits to create the scallop profiles 18) Move the profiled back into position. Select the carriage and intersect model 19) Remove all the unwanted bits Obviously there's lots of detail missing and it will be hard to exactly recreate all the curves but with this method of intersecting and removing surfaces you should be able to get pretty close. To do better you will need to get one of the plugins for sketchup which allows proper loft and extrusion methods, such as Fedo's CurviLoft.
Multiple identity account
Thanks Rabs.... I am not fully aware of all tools in SketchUp. It will take me some time to learn it all. I will model it in 1:1 for ease. Once again thanks for all that. It was very much useful. Cheers!J.
Multiple identity account
Hello Rabs...I must take this opportunity to thank you. Thanks to your quick tutorial I've been able to have a go at making my model in SketchUp. This is the result after my very first try. Thanks so much for actually taking the time to do the small demo with images and all. It means alot. Cheers! J.
kintbury jon
Interesting prototype. Has one of the buffers fallen off? Nice work by the way.
Multiple identity account
Interesting prototype. Has one of the buffers fallen off? Nice work by the way. Hi, It was removed due to something being defective (I think the sprung mechanism). It has since been replaced. Have a look at this other picture below. This design is now standard on IR and all DEMUs manufactured in 2015 sport this design. Cheers! J.
Rabs
You're welcome, I'm glad it was helpful. That's starting to look really good. Please do post more pictures as you go through and build this. I'll be very interested to see how it turns out.

As that was just a quick trial I never actually used proper measurements (still like the way it turned out though). I've scrutinized it and made not of some of the obvious changes that need to be done. Most of which is the angle of the cab-shell and lowering of things like the windshield, destination boards, cab-side windows, headlights and marker lights and finally tapering it less as I over did it. Will have an update tomorow. Cheers! JBM
mgbusa
Also thanks from me, Rabs. It seems I wasted a lot of time building my model. Your way is so much easier and cleaner.
