MOK 14xx

I have been working on a 14xx chassis which can be seen in the chassispro2 jig, which incidentally makes construction very straightforward

the more interesting point is the hornblocks which I am working on

hopefully you can see the ballraces, these really do make a difference and I will try and standardise on them in future. A side benefit is that they almost eliminate sideplay, which is something you don't really want with S7 clearences

The ballraces also showing some smaller 2mmi/d and 1.5mm i/d for wagons

Hi 28ten

Are these the Hobby Holidays hornblocks, or to your own design. If HH, how easy were they to use?

Regards

They started as hobby holiday units but I discarded the expensive cnc hornguides  the horn guide is just 5x2 brass acting on the ballrace.

I have drawn up my own artwork for the next lot I do. The bearings can be sourced for 60p each the angle is pence per hornblock, so it will also be a lot cheaper. the HH units are shown here link you can see the etched part I have used

The HH are easy enough to use they are just very un-prototypical.

If there is interest, I will photograph the construction next time. I also have some ballraces for wagons/coaches, which I am working on.....

Thanks for that. Will you make your etchings available if others (ie me) wish to follow suit? While I liked the HH idea, I felt that they were just too bulky. I only saw the prototype that Phil was working on, so I wasn't sure whether he had made any amendments.

Yes, you (or anybody else) can have some  the etch is just a simple carrier for the ball race, so it's nothing fancy!

I agree they are too bulky and rather overpriced for what they are.

I'd be rather interested to know where the bearings came from, please. I've found similar, but not 60p each!

I have added a pic of the ballraces above.

Mine came from a local supplier, you do have to buy in bulk though. you could try SMB

lots of bearings here

Also ebay from Hong Kong, they will arrive in about 2weeks. whatever you do if you pay over ??1 you are paying too much

They are needle roller bearings, from that site these look a better bet but I couldn't see any 3/16 (assuming you want them for o gauge axles)

There were some 3/16 on that page as well as 1/8" for 4mm but the outside diameter was a little large.

I'd always thought the bearings were a bigger cost in the Hobby Holidays package but they are quite cheap when you use your own hornguides.

I looked at these for 4mm but they are still slightly big on the OD http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3Racing-Double-Metal-Shield-Bearing-1-8x1-4x7-64-10-pc_W0QQitemZ170358147891QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN?hash=item27aa230b33&_trksid=p4634.c0.m14.l1262

Bearings are cheap these days, my guess Hobby Hoildays pay about 50p each, about the same for the etch guide, leaving ??14 to cover the cnc and profit!!

I would have thought the gains in a free running chassis in 4 mm would be quite signifigant, The 2mm I/d I have are about the limit for practical use, and as you the o/d is the limiting factor

They are needle roller bearings

Does that mean they're of limited use then (although closer to the real thing)? I figured I could turn the axles down from 3/16 to 4mm to suit. It's for a, slightly daft, plan that's still in the floating around my mind stages.. :D

I have never used Roller bearings, try them and let us know! You will need to be accurate with tha axle diameter if you turn them down, also make sure they are concentric. Tell us what the plan is!!

Cheers for the tips - I think I might give them a go, as they will be 'Just Like the Real Thing' ;) :P

I don't want to say too much about the plans at the moment, just in case I decide that it is too daft for me to do, but it would involve taking a perfectly good kit, throwing away the bogies, and making my own... :O

Love the CSB. What spring diameter are you using?

P.S. I can't see the whole of your two pics, because the silly right-hand frame thing obscures them, and nothing happens (should it be in 'lightbox' mode?) when I click to try to see the whole pic.

The CSB is 28thou.

You only get lightbox mode if the original image is larger than 640px (I think) so I may start uploading at a higher resolution

TBH I'm still feeling my way about with it :D
