37114
Hi all, I would like to build a 00 model of Hymac 580 Excavator as a load for my Flatrol wagon, having seen numeorus pictures of them on Paul Bartletts site. In a recent issue of Railway Modeller (which I think has since been recycled) there was an advert for a company producing these in 00, but I looked through the latest copy last night and the advert didn't seem to be in there. Can anybody assist with company name/detail? Many Thanks.

Not sure about kits for these, but have a look on 'Morfa Bank Sidings' under layouts, or possibly the 'On My Work Bench' thread on here http://www.emgauge70s.co.uk/modelpageindex.html to see how Hywel Thomas converted one from a die-cast model. 37114
Hi Brian, Thanks for the link, I had seen that one and was minded to go down that route until I saw the add in RM, now kicking myself for not grabbing the page out before the magazine got binned. If I can't get hold of a kit, I will do the same as what Hywel did I think.

Brilliant just what I was after so I have ordered one, will stick some pictures on here when it arrives. From what little research I have done not being a digger expert the kit is listed as a 590 where as I believe the 580 was the more numerous model and was what BR purchased but the cab and body shape seem similar so will do for me, if neccessary I can modify as necessary. Thanks Brian and Phill for the help and speedy response. Also found that Hymac's have their own forum albeit hosted in Finnish! http://www.maskinisten.net/viewforum.php?f=

I purchased these a while ago on e.bay for a fraction of the shop price and was amazed at the quality and their articulated parts. Need some rework and a spray but here are the as brought versions. 37114
Hi Mark, Thanks for posting the pics, if I couldn't have found a Hymac kit I was looking at getting a Norscot or Motorart machine to modify, the Hymac's look pretty dated now but they seem to be the machine of choice and there were plenty in use, found these on Paul Bartlett site: http://gallery6801.f.../p24769988.html http://gallery6801.f.../p24770001.html http://gallery6801.f.../p65110971.html http://gallery6801.f.../p54640956.html http://gallery6801.f.../p54640958.html http://gallery6801.f.../p54640935.html I intend to aquire a Cambrian Loriot to put the excavator on, should be something a little different to my current wagons when finished. jonhall
I had much the same idea, but was going to do and etched/resin hybrid, but other things got in the way. I did however join a Hymac yahoo group, and the owner of an american example scanned his service manual drawing, and then went and measured the example in his back yard so that I had something to scale from The midland railway center at bButterley have one they use for coaling, but which can usually be studied. They look dated now, but when you look what had been used only a few years previously (rope-operated front loaders and back hoes), they really were 'white-hot technology'- their Welsh origins made them popular with the WR CCE as well. Jon Thanks Jon, will be useful when I get round to having a look at the kit. BTW on the BW models site while looking for an excavator, I noticed they have a Dennis RS fire Tender, which from memory you were possibly interested in for BNS? 37114
I picked the kit up from the post office on the way into work, just had a quick look in the box and on the face of it the kit seems a nice model, looks like there are about 75 parts though so won't be that quick a build! Will stick some photos up when I get the chance.
jcb 3c
There are 61 pages of old Hymac pictures here (you,ve got to register) http://www.classicmachinery.net/forum/excavators-f3/hymac-excavators-t21.html The Morfa Bank sidings excavator / low loader is a fine model but the Scammell Handyman would collapse under that size of load ! 37114
As promised, I have some pics of the Rosencombe replicas HYMAC 590 kit which I have finished (except final weathering and hydraulic pipes). The kit requires bits of fettling on some of the castings but the instructions are good. I assembled the kit with super glue, but you could use low melt solder if you wished.
