Russell Saxton
Following on from the old forum I'm still trying to get a full list of WD 2-8-0s fitted with the WR top feeds and fire iron tunnels. I'm also trying to find out the last survivors, best I have so far is 90529 withdrawn in November 1965 and 90466 in December. List as it stands is 90125/45/8/9, 90201/7/25/51/71/84/97, 90323/63/5/96/9, 90466/83/5, 90529/44/8/63/72/85, 90630/46/52/76/82 Plus 90124/92 and 90720 that had the fire iron tunnel but no WR top feed. Out of list one 90271/646/52 are described as having 'gothic' top feeds (cheers nortonian) but Im unsure what that means, anyone any the wiser? I suspect that most WR based examples had this mod and as most were transferred away form the WR in the early 60s you could see this variant on the ERE, NER and LMR but did these regions remove the WR mods? They didnt with 90466/529 as they kept the top feed to the end of their lives. http://www.annesleyfireman.com/photos/index.album/90466?i=14 Now dated as March 8 1965, not 1966. Nortonian
Hi Russell, I believe the word `Gothic` was used by JWP Rowledge in his book on Austerity 2-8-0 & 2-10-0`s. I will keep looking for more engines and let you know my findings. I suspect its just the WR cover removed or missing to show the valve body underneath. Like most engine classes, the WD`s were no different in having many detail differences. The post-it notes sticking out of the pages of said book tell me that at least one engine, no 63077 had a left-hand fireiron cage on the tender. Russell Saxton
A particularly interesting example-90125 not only had a WR top feed till withdrawn in late 1965 but also had a yellow diagonal stripe on the cab prohibiting it from working under the wires south of Crewe. Was this unique and was it anything to do with the WR top feed? http://81.31.125.226/adrian/lostockhall/10d.html
Russell Saxton
Just posting to keep this one fresh. Im still after making a full list and knowing the last survivor if anyone knows it. I assume 90125 was the sole WD to have a stripe on thecabside with a top feed in this style and that was probably why it wore it, does anyone have any more gen or know of any other one off locos to have the diagonal stripe. Russell Saxton
90261 and 90466 also had the diagonal stripe on the cabside. 90466 ran till December 1965.
