Hello,
I am interested in modelling Sir Nigel Gresley as she appeared in the following photos. I read in Vol. 3 from the "Ian Allen Locomotives in Detail" series that No. 7 was originally fitted with cast brass nameplates but were replaced by a "fabricated type which had stainless steel letters and borders."
In current preserved form No. 7 has stainless steel nameplates, but I am wondering if they were like this during BR days as well? I had the impression that the A4s with stainless steel type nameplates were simply chrome plated, which eventually wore off over time. For example, Dominion of Canada had brass type nameplates before its most recent restoration, and currently are stainless steel again. The few color images I have seen of SNG during BR days have all been inconclusive.
Note the color of the cab side builders plate and of the nameplate below.
Hope you can help me out!
