Gloucester Road
Worked on the tree that is located on the otherside of the canal. I used my technique that is out lined in entry 702 of my Gloucester Road thread, in short I cover a woodland scenic tree in plaster, carve it to make bark, paint it and then weather it with powders. This time I used a different product for the leaves, They are very effective. the new(to me) leaf product comes in three sheets per pack, used one for this tree cut into different lengths to simulate shorter branches and leaves then glue onto the top of the bigger branches, photo taken from bottom the tree, will be planted by the canal later close up of the leaves Edited January 8, 2016 by Gloucester Road
Gloucester Road
As it's Saturday I took a wander down along the canal with the dog and stopped in at The Kings Arms. While there we were treated to 66072 heading North, and some shots of the new tree. Stephen
Gloucester Road
57602 nicely framed by the tree. must admit to being rather pleased with how this tree came out, big old knotty looking thing with nice leaf definition. Stephen

Gloucester Road
Started work on the far left portion of the diorama. I wanted to have a muddy farm road down to gate and fence with a style for walkers to get over and then fence by canal. So http://www.modelrailwayscenery.com/to the rescue. I then used some card, plaster, paints and made a muddy path. This is where i am this morning, muddy track, fence, gate, style and walkway sign. Gloucester Road
It's a bit of a process putting the fences together as they are so small, but the results are really nice. You cut out the posts and then add them to the fences to thicken the fence post.
Gloucester Road
That's it all but the water left to finish. Last of the fencing and grass was put down today; pleased with how it came out. Michael Palin was seen running north. stephen
Gloucester Road
Down by the canal today and managed to take some pictures of the field and new fencing that had recently been installed by the farmer. Looks like a new gate has been put in judging by the colour difference While looking across the canal I heard the rumble of an approaching train, and 47715 Haymarket slowed for a signal check. So I was able to grab a few shots of this trusty loco pulling it NSE stock. Then while it was siiting still got a close up and then one behind the The Kings Arms Now need to find some other stuff to do so I dont get sucked into watching some American Football came that starts later on. Rabs
Hi Stephen, That looks like a really lovely scene. I'm interested in how you did your flowers and shrubs because, to my eye, they are very convincing. Could you tell us a bit more about how you made them?
Gloucester Road
Here is how some of the flowers and shrubs are made. White and pink flowers: I use pasture and early fall which is clearly meant for bigger scale than "N". It can, however, be cut and trimmed in thickness to scale better for N. then just blend it into existing grass. Bigger clumps of purple and yellow: Heather and buttercups are used, again seem to be for lager scale. These to can be cut to size and you are left with vines and branchs from the centre sections Bushes: Ivy summer was used. Cut into strips and can be used as climbing ivy or scrunched together for hedges Bushes and trees: Beachtree summer was used to make trees, as described above in tree making post, or cut into clumps for bushes Ive used products that are meant for scales other than N but with trimming and careful placement they seemed to work. Hope this helps Stephen

eastwestdivide
Have you considered leaving the canal empty "for maintenance"? And then all you have to do is model mud rather than water? Maybe with a grounded waterways work boat: https://www.flickr.com/photos/45777493@N06/6823318253/in/album-72157629923842469/ or like this newspaper story: http://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/news/local-news/floods-leave-boats-stranded-5309233

Kiwi
Gloucester Road, this is a great thread, with fascinating pictures. But would you mind dropping the fancy typography/font. It's very pretty, but damned hard to read. It seriously detracts from the interesting content. Hope this doesn't offend. It's not meant to.

Gloucester Road
While work commenced on my sons module, see my other adventures thread, I played with making water for the canal. The idea had bounced around about a dried up canal and try as I might it didnt look right. So having decided that the canal is to deep I made up an insert for the water, pouring commenced. First the insert was painted, then walls built with tape to allow resin to set at a depth, resin added, then as it dried waves were added. These look a bit dramatic but as it sets and dries they soften to a nice ripple. Stephen
Gloucester Road
Awoke this morning to find the dust cloth I used to keep resin clean while it set pressed into the resin, shaped like a cat paw! A little work with the heat gun and soon all was fixed. I grew a little impatient after this and removed some of "wall" supports. This was then placed on the module to see how it all looked. Other than looking like flood barriers have been erected and sitting a little proud, I'm quite chuffed with this. thing it will make a great finish once placed in and blended into the banks. Gloucester Road
Returned home from 8 days of flying expecting to see the resin had set, it hasn't. It is now outside under a towel with a breeze blowing over it to see if that helps; if not another option will need to be explored
Gloucester Road
Water has gone off, finally. My original idea was to pull the tape off, however that didnt work, so I cut it down and grassed over it. The far bank has been grassed and blended in. Starting to look like a river with grass down to water line. stephen
Gloucester Road
An unidentified Freightliner class 70 makes it way along the canal. must say I'm very pleased with how the grass and water have all come together.
