outcastjack
Time for me to throw my hat into the cake box... I have been scrabbling around for a decent idea for this, then looking through the excellent entries posted up on here what I need to do is add water to electricity. You will have to bear with me for a few days for this to start for seasonal reasons but it will contain: -Flat water -A small boat -A bridge -A length of London Underground track -If I have time then either some A or S stock (scratch built to keep cost down). The aim is to do it all from consumables and the bits box. Budget will be £10. Edited April 30, 2018 by outcastjack
outcastjack
The basic plan is this. A double track bridge crossing the grand union with a single sculler emerging from under the bridge. On the right hand bank next to the bridge sit a pair of terminal boxes. A cable bridge will cross from them over the tracks.
outcastjack
The seasonal distractions continue but I have managed to find time to sketch out some bits to save time when I can actually get cracking.
outcastjack
I finally managed to get some time to actually start the physical work. I made this model of me rowing a rather nice Empacher when I was at uni and have never found the right place for it, until now! The basis of the land form has been put together and a start on the greenery. The boat will be glued down once the water has been finished. The other bit to be reused is this platform with terminal boxes on, the boxes are ratio I think and the platform was made from plasticard and brass wire. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/gallery/image/84220-20171229-221201/
outcastjack
I have found time over the last few days to design and cut out using my silhouette the following slightly daunting pile of bits for the bridge. I am not sure about the rivets they may not be prominent enough, but worrying about that can wait until after painting. Edit: the pile is bigger than it looks... outcastjack
The bridge has started to come together. An idea of how the finished article will look.
outcastjack
The bridge structure is largely finished, just painting and detailing left for it And then onto track. However the big news is that a full length A stock car is 210mm long... Edited January 9, 2018 by outcastjack
andyfoulger
this is shaping up very nicely ... As the car is too long - have you considered cutting it in 'half' and displaying the two ends coupled together to portray two cars - some additional trimming of the car will be required so that they align with the diorama edges and some trickery can be used to support to open ends given that the bogies are now in the centre. regards Andy Edited January 9, 2018 by andyfoulger
Bergmann
I just like I would divide the car body in any case asymmetrically.
outcastjack
These are really good ideas, thank you. I think rather than have the back scene continue round to the sides, I will mount the cut ends of the coach onto small sections of mirror. That should reflect the track and train giving an impression of greater depth. (hopefully)
outcastjack
Following on from the comments earlier, I have purchased some mirror stickers from ebay for 99p, snail mail should allow me time to get the model ready for them before they arrive from China. I also did the corrugated edging for the canal today, I had intended to use DAS clay and mould it to shape but had trouble keeping the finish as sharp as i felt was needed. Fortunately I had some off cuts of corrugated roofing which was able to do the trick: I had also been having trouble with my foam-board base warping, I gave the bottom a wash of cheap paint thinned with water and that seems to have cured it.
outcastjack
My rower finally has a home. The boat has been glued down.
009 micro modeller
Very nice - reminds me of the Watford branch crossing the Grand Union Canal. I like the ideas for dealing with the excess coach length and it may be too late but is having the bridge slightly diagonal to give more length a possibility? outcastjack
Thank you for the nice comments, it is actually based on that bridge =D I think having the bridge on a diagonal with a half relief coach would have been better but i don't fancy revisiting it now... In other news I put the water down far too thick and it has cracked.
Marly51
Oops - I’ve not used any special water products yet! Hope you are able to remedy it? I’m still old school - layering paint with varnish or PVA.
009 micro modeller
Hope you manage to sort out the water. Could the cracks represent ice instead? I once had a similar problem caused by putting too much 'water' in each layer so it shrank to the contours of the pond but not sure in this case. outcastjack
I have always used PVA before but picked up a bottle of "water magic" a few months back. I figured this would be the ideal project to try it out and so far failed miserably... I have stripped the stuff off and repainted the base and intend to give it another quick (this time very thin) wash and see how it goes from there. outcastjack
The thin coat seems to have worked pretty well but the impression of depth is poor (unsurprisingly given how thin I painted it on to avoid cracking). I am struggling to see what it offers over PVA other than a hugely inflated price at this point, although I may re-evaluate once I have applied a few more coats of the stuff. Whilst I waited for it to dry I painted the bridge and track bed.
outcastjack
Still awaiting conductor rails (I have a length of odd rail somewhere which might do) but i am really chuffed with how this is looking. Fortunately although LU isn't very well provided for, Peco do conductor rail chairs which will save a lot of effort in finishing this off!
outcastjack
3rd and 4th rails in!
outcastjack
The next meaningful bit of progress has been the cable bridge carrying wires from the terminal boxes over the running lines.
outcastjack
The front bit of some A-stock has started progressing.
outcastjack
I had a go at making the roof today but the result was not great. The compound curve at the front looks rubbish. I am torn between continuing down my normal route of filling and sanding. Or trying something new and having a crack at vacuum forming. If I do try does anyone have any advice? Guest ShildonShunter
Hi outcastjack you have done a great job on the bridge and cables looks really authentic. Interested to see how the A stock turns out keep up the great modelling.
outcastjack
Thank you Kevin, that is really kind! The bridge and cables took a while but being flat worked nicely with plastic sheet, the train on the other hand: I am reasonably happy with it now after some fettling but I am finding myself more and more tempted by trying the roof again using vacuum forming. I have an oven and a hoover in my kitchen, how hard can it be? =D Edited February 14, 2018 by outcastjack
