Toller diorama

Toller was a station on the GWR Bridport branch and I was asked to build a diorama of the station as it was in the late 1950's when it was part of the Southern region and had been repainted in green and cream. The model is 0 gauge and measures 8' x 2'3" on two boards. By the late 50's the cattle pen and loading gauge had gone but I was asked to include them. The siding was lifted in 1960. 

 

 

The main running line was laid with concrete sleepers, but using chaired bullhead track, while the siding was laid with concrete pots installed in the 1940's, so the trackwork is more interesting than you'd expect at such a small station.

 

 

I should have blown the loose ballast off the platform! The buildings on the backscene are from the real village, including the church. The point is Peco, but with the horrible great lump of plastic cut away from around the tie bar and replaced with C&L sleepers and chairs.

 

 

 

All the grass uses static strands of various lengths, but I don't use an applicator, I use my fingers.

The concrete sleepers are Peco with C&L rail and chairs. The siding has pots cast in Polyfilla, C&L chairs and rail and Plastruct gauging bars.

Looks great! I've seen other people use their fingers to create the static grass effect and you've done it very well. The effect is very nice and random. Is the layout operational?

No, purely a diorama so there is no wiring.

Peter I must say your diorama looks great. The modelling and scenery work looks really nice, it’s a shame the diorama is not operational.

There was one in the Railway Modeller years back by CJ Freezer called “MuchWaiting”, a Halt with a siding, with a short fiddle siding each end. I’ve seen similar at shows, and it does form quite an effective model for operation. Lovely workmanship giving a beautiful finish, thanks for putting it on.

That river is one of the best I've seen. It looks like real water.

It's just gloss varnish Jon, poured on straight from the tin. It has to be Polyurethane though, not the quick drying stuff. I think I put on three layers, and each one takes a couple of days to dry. I also managed to kick over a half full can of varnish which didn't make my day!

I visited Toller several times just before the Bridport branch closed and took some measurements of the station. The station building is now at Totnes Riverside station. The model captures the appearance of the station very well.

Only just found this, I read the article on Toller in the current edition of Railway Modeller and thought it would make a nice Diorama. It is a lovely model you have created, I was minded to build something similar in O gauge.
