Templecombe - Southern shed

Hi,

 

IIRC, there was a small wooden loco shed at Templecombe built and used by the LSWR for the pilot. It was featured in a publication with the G6 either close by or just inside, the images were fairly close and very clear rather the usual blurry distant shots. Could the shed have been featured in one of the OPC survey books?

 

Unfortunately, online searches have proved fruitless and examination of the trackplan in the Mac Hawkins book failed to identify the location. 

 

We just need to know where to find the images and a little more about the shed itself. Of course, a photo or two would be wonderful.

 

A small working diorama of the shed Is the spur for this request, a SEF G6 is in hand as are a couple of internal user wagons. It will be a first for the aeromodeller in our group and useful for raising awareness of the SDJR.

OPC's Hawkins & Reeve does indeed have a pic of the shed, which was on the up side towards Yeovil, and has a track plan dated 1930. But the loco on shed is a Small Hopper and its tender is sticking out. The book believes the shed fell out of use circa 1951, with Southern locos then using the S&D shed.

Further questions, was the Southern shed exclusively used by the Southern pilot loco and did it use the 71H code?

Err - that was an Irwell Press book in 1990, unless they both did an earlier one for OPC?

 

Anyway, the IP book (and also "Main Line to the West Part 2") both claim that the actual shed was demolished in 1935/6, although (new) coal and water facilities continued to be provided there and the loco allocation remained until the 1950s.

 

Incidentally, as a total aside, the same book - when discussing the even-less-well-recorded shed at Chard Town- refers to the 'forthcoming new book on the Chard Branch from Ian Harrison'. That has finally arrived after 19 years!

What an odd comment. Why would I quote OPC if it was in fact George Reeves's own later publishing company, Irwell? The SBN (no, not ISBN) was 86093 020 3, 1979.
