Southern Q Class on the workbench

Always start with an 0-6-0 because its easy and what could be easier than starting with a Wills SEF kit of a Maunsell Q class? Lovely old plain Jane kit but badly compromised by the huge cut-out for the Tri-ang X04 however like the curate's egg, it does have some good bits such as the nice compensated chassis which is powered by a High-Level drive and a Mashima.

The tender is a Bachmann N class which is rather better than the original, decoder is a ZTC. Out of sight is a pile of nice Markit upgrade bits, a Comet 4F backhead and some excellent plates from Garry at 247.

Not really suitable for Beaminster Junction but the lure of the old S&DJR is rather strong and the pictures of 30458 in the Fordingbridge gallery are hard to resist, maybe a change of venue and trackplan?

Looking good Des,

I particularly like the look of the chassis, are the coupling rods the ones supplied in the etch?

The Highlevel gearbox looks like the RoadRunnerPlus, what ratio did you go for?

Cheers,

According to Williams & Percival in BR Steam Locos Southern Region :

531-5/7/9-42/4/6/8 had multiple-jet blastpipe & large diameter chimney fitted by Bulleid

549 was given a single stovepipe chimney in 1956, but later received a BR Standard single chimney

530/6/8/43/5/7 were given the BR Standard single chimney from 1960.

Hope this makes sense!

Hi Bob,

It really is just the old Wills kit but fitted with their new (and lovely) etched chassis. Considerings its shortcomings it is still a nice lump but I hope that Dave Ellis will consider it for upgrading in the not too distant future.

Hopefully the thread will illustrate the necessary changes needed to transform the Q-class from 60's bodyline to 10's body beautiful.

DesA

BTW 60's to 10's just sounds wrong

The first problem has been encountered- there seems to be no one selling an etched smokebox plate for 30541, Gary does not feature this number in his range.

Is there another source or a custom service?

An update - 30541 is now in Gary's list :D

Hi Des

If you've not yet sourced a smokebox numberplate to suit, try Gareth at Guilplates (01483 565980) - I'm pretty sure that they can etch ANY numberplate to order.

Do you still need the shed allocations for the Q Class - if so I can either PM you or add them to this thread in case anyone else is interested.

Regards

Mike

However, Mike, I would like to understand where the Q's were being used in the late 50's. I have Warmsley's book but the timeframe is too narrow.

Please add them to the thread so that all can benefit.

Thank you

Tim

The following list shows allocations of the Q Class from January 1957 to withdrawal, unfortunately I don't have the relevant class allocation book so have extracted it from the SR shed allocations. Hopefully I haven't gone cross-eyed in the process!

Hope this info is useful,

Regards

Mike

Nice looking model DesA.

Always a pleasure to have a chat with the guys on the South East Finecast stand. Me and Natalie have a P class of theirs iirc in the cupboard to do one day (it was what they recommended as a first starter kit). But there are certainly a number of their kits on the 'want' list, but first to buy needed tools and start simpler (and save!).
