EWS yards

Hi all!

Ive recently been given an idea to build a model of an EWS yard however, where i live in Southampton i only see freightliner trains mainly which is a shame. Does anyone have any pictures or information on a small yard and what wagons would be found there? I model in OO and have about 1ftx3ft to use

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Have just had a rethink and any pictures at all of EWS yards, BR engineers yards will be helpful. Especially helpful would of the wagon siding in Eastleigh near the station

Thanks again

Hi,
Are you in a position to get to Eastleigh and take some pictures yourself? Can't beat a bit of hands on research.
You can get some good views from the station itself, the bridges and the multi story car park on the opposite side of the road.

If you cant get there then have a look at Bing maps, birds eye view.
Westbury  would be a nice trip out too by train from Southampton, There is a yard near the station and you can walk down a track that goes near the wagon works and sidings. Access is via the station car park.

Cheers

You might be able to do something based on Westbury wagon repair depot (WRD) - ? Pretty much any EWS fleet wagon from the area (any engineers wagon, or EWS-owned aggregates hopper/box) would be plausible - it's 2 or 3 sidings so shrinking it to 3' x 1' would be possible, and sees lots of wagon variety.

It's on the South side of Westbury station, if you wanted to do a site visit all these were taken (through a fence) from the yard access road that's also a public footpath...turn right out of the station entrance and follow the fence line...

Cheers glorious NSE

Bit far for me to travel but I probably will do something like this or a cider mills sidings. Is the blue corrugated building the main works building or can repairs be done outside?

Would make a good day trip over the summer holidays if you could convince the parents you wanted a day trip. Cheaper day out than if they took you to Chessington or whatever. ;)

The blue building is the WRD workshop, but I would guess that a lot of the more minor repairs and safety checks happen outside.

Just noticed it's now on Google streetview as well, not quite as good as a research trip, but it gives you the feel...

How about Didcot Fuel Point?

A one road shed with two(?) sidings, normally DBS 66s or the Didcot Yard 08 but also the occasional visitor such as MPVs, DCR's Class 56. Usually a couple of wagons knocking around there as well.

On top of that this area is used to transfer steam loco's from their road transport to rail pending their onward move over to the Didcot Railway Centre.

The fuel point also sits right in front of the big Thames Valley Signalling Centre which would make an interesting back scene.

All easily viewable from the Station Car Park.

And lots of lovely GWR buffer stops for me to model...

I think it's just a covered fuelling facility. I think they do minor exams there but not 100% sure.

Thanks

Not a lot..

Damn! Looks like I need to come up with some excuses!

At your age you shouldn't need an excuse, just some saved pocket money for a return ticket on the train. I went all over the place by train as a teenager.

Good luck with your field trip :)
