RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 5, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 5, 2013 This is really just a bit of fun. RMweb does not seem to have much on for Christmas, so here goes. My girlfriend was very keen on buying Xmas decorations, having a drinks party, etc., so this led me to think about a micro seasonal layout to bring some balance to this. I have a collection of 009 stock from way back, so a sort through this yielded a couple of Eggerbahn locos which could be persuaded to run again. I had a stout Christmas cracker box which was ideal at 16" across for the display. This was too small for a circle of setrack to be used, so I looped a length of N gauge flexitrack instead. This seemed to work OK. I tried running the locos on a set of 4 AA batteries but they wouldn't have it (the Ixion diesel in the background was fine on these!) Next the box was prepared and painted. A few scenic items added to see what it looked like. The original idea was to use cheap 'Santa' cake decoration figures but not many could be found on a trip to town. So this weekend adding some scenic effects - low hill covered in snow, pine forest, backscene - and we'll be ready to go! Dava

RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 6, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 6, 2013 Tonight I stuck the track down, made a station platform, a low hill & (big step) poured dilute wall filler over most of it....we'll see if its dried tomorrow! RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 8, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 8, 2013 So the Wilkinsons wall filler did its job, then got painted over, lots of track cleaning & sundry other scenic work which is continuing..... Here the first test train makes its way through the snow.... Meanwhile, back at the works, the veteran Egger loco has been receiving attention. For fans of these brave little locos, here are: 2 O&K steam locos & a Works diesel I've had since the 1970's, a Fiery Elias tram loco from the 1990's re-run which does not run as well as the others!. Since then I've been adding pine trees. There may be another quick update before a business trip to Canada on Wednesday! Dava

RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 10, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 10, 2013 Two very quick shots of the festive cracker-box layout before I have to go & pack for Canada where they have real snow, apparently. When on display there will be chocolate Santas and teddies for the tinies. Maybe even a running train! Compliments of the season... Dava
Twright
That looks much better painted and with hills.
RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 11, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 11, 2013 Now at Ottawa airport, its -10 here with real snow & what's worse $10 for a beer! 1 flight to go today, pleased you liked the micro layout. Dava
RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 12, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 12, 2013 Arrived in Cape Breton last night, drove around in icy wind today. Looks like the railway is moribund but got a book on the railway history which looks interesting.
RMweb Premium Dava Posted January 2, 2014 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2, 2014 Final shot of the Christmas micro-layout before it gets packed away. I enjoyed getting the Egger locos running again, the visiting kids liked it too - with the chocolate santas and teddies! Dava

andyram
A nice idea. I have been thinking of something similar to run around the base of our Christmas tree next year!
RMweb Premium Dava Posted December 24, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 24, 2015 Nothing like a seasonal excuse to dust off a two-year old thread to see if that Xmas 009 roundy railway in a crackerbox still works.... It does not seem too much the worse for wear either, despite (amazingly) crossing the Atlantic twice since then. Just some bent fir trees to straighten out. Those little Egger locos still run surprisingly well after 40 years....so will entertain visitors over Christmas. Good to be back in my workshop this year. The end of Coxheath Sidings is behind and above the 009 box. It has its own thread and also been worked on today. Aren't these micro layouts fun? http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/96750-easy-low-cost-micro-layout-baseboard-ideas/page-5&do=findComment&comment=2137042 Merry Christmas!
