RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 4, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 Hi all Just thought I'd post the various trains I've taken whilst travelling. Most are quite old 30- 40 years or so. (I haven't taken many, although I like trains, I don't generally photograph them!) These are on the ZillertalBahn 1972 Jenbach, abandoned tender loco (Anybody know if this was rebuilt into what is now No.4?) Entering Strass in Zillertal, on the way to Mayrhofen: Two pictures of the loco (No.2) doing it's run round at Mayrhofen: View of the station from above showing the now removed line to the power station: 1980 Train to Mayrhofen entering Strass in Zillertal station: Close up of the loco (No.3): (The wagon to the left is a standard gauge one on a transporter wagon) View of the cab: View through the spectacle plate: Keith
Pacific231G
Excellent Keith, thanks for posting these; they bring back memories. I visited the Zillertalbahn a couple of years later during an OBB rail-pass based holiday in Austria. The hotel in Jenbach was full but they found a bathroom large enough for a camp bed so, over two days, I was able to visit both the Zillertalbahn and the Achenseebahn. It wasn't really a railway exploring holiday but I did also spend a day on the standard gauge lokalbahnen around Mistelbach and Dobermannsdorf north east of Vienna where they still had steam hauled mixed trains. I took very few photos- I'd made a deliberate decision on that trip to experience places rather than photograph them- but if I can find them I'll post the better ones. It looks like you visited the Zillertalbahn before the relentlessly intrusive adverts for Jagermeister appeared on what seemed like every vertical surface on every coach. I didn't notice the extension to the hydro scheme at Mayrhofen but have no idea whether it had gone or I was just being unobservant.
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 4, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 4, 2015 I noticed whilst I was posting the photos that Loco no.3 has odd sized cylinders. Apparently they are 500mm (LH) and 320mm (RH) so it is a rare breed, a two cylinder compound. And the abandoned loco No.4 was a former Borsig German Feldbahn loco and was sold on in 1974 http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heeresfeldbahnlokomotive_HF_210_E Keith

EddieB
I see what you mean by a mixed bag, Keith! The Hong Kong loco belonged to the Kowloon-Canton Railway, and clearly displays its GM-EMD heritage - a G16 built in 1961. Do you have a record of the location and number of the Egyptian loco? I think it's a GM-EMD G8 - which in Egypt were 3500 series (some appear to have had spikes to stop roof riders covering the roof mounted grilles). The photos were just taken whilst I was "out and about" As I said before I'm not a dedicated railway photographer, I just take things that seem interesting. The only dedicated bit of overseas railway photography I did was in Switzerland when the BOB had it's (75th?) anniversary. I was there purely by chance. Zweilutschine depot was open and there was plenty of steam running. I only had a camcorder with me so If I can get some decent screengrabs I'll post them. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 7, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 7, 2015 I've now done some screen grabs of my VHS video taken at the BOB (Berner Oberland Bahn) Centenary celebrations (1990) in Switzerland. (Sorry about the quality, I hope it doesn't detract from the subject matter.) Wilderswil Station showing the Schynige Platte sign and ad for celebrations: Close up of sign: Typical train of the period: Another shot showing how the two portions (to Zweilutschinen) travel together: (this is the old livery of course) Loco 11 with special service Interlaken - Zweilutschinen arriving at Wilderswil: This loco is a RhB (L&D line) class G 3/4 2-6-0T known as "Heidi" It was owned by the Eiger Model Railway Club and kept at Zweilutschinen depot but after 1990 it was moved elsewhere No 11 makes a spirited start away from Wilderswil: And a bit further up the valley: More to come! RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 9, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 9, 2015 A few more pictures from the BOB 100th annoversary celebrations At Zweilutscine depot Number 1067 a HG 3/3 of the Brunigbahn which is a combined rack/adhesion loco with two engines. The BOB had 4 near identical engines of this type (Nos 7-10) all now scrapped so 1067 is quite appropriate for the line. (It is normally kept at Ballenberg for forays along the Brunigbahn from Meiringen to Giswil) 1067 and 11 together: 1067 does a run past: 11 does a run past: Keith
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 11, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 11, 2015 Some more shots from the BOB anniversary (all from video grabs hence the variable quality!) This time the Schynige Platte Bahn Depot from Wilderswil station: No.5 a class H2/3 Rack only tank: No.5 exits the depot to attach to it's coach: Distant shot of No.5 climbing Schynige Platte: One of the Heritage electric locos in action: Preserved bus outside the depot: Keith
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 20, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 20, 2015 A few more pictures culled from my VHS tapes Burglauenen Station waiting in the loop for a Grindelwald bound train to pass: Decending the rack section toward Zweilütschinen alongside the Grindelwaldstraße: Inside Zweilütschinen Depot: A little train for little people: Keith
Bill Jamieson
Hi all Just thought I'd post the various trains I've taken whilst travelling. Most are quite old 30- 40 years or so. RMweb Premium melmerby Posted June 27, 2015 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted June 27, 2015 Both the 1972 and 1980 shots described as "On the way to Mayrhofen' show trains entering Strass station. Bill I know the first one is southbound. *Is the second also? The track layout with the point does not co-incide with a current Google maps shot. (I have now changed the captions) Keith EDIT *from the shadows being cast it must be southbound!
Bill Jamieson
Keith, Yes, the track layout must have been altered at some point between 1980 and 2005 - see http://www.railbrit.co.uk/location.php?photographer=Bill_Jamieson&loc=Strass This shows a diesel hauled train for Mayrhofen approaching Strass in 2005. The building on the right matches the one in your 1980 shot. Bill
RMweb Premium melmerby Posted February 9, 2016 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 9, 2016 Found a few more pictures taken during the BOB 100th anniversary celebrations. These are fron negatives so a bit better quality: Schynige Platter Bahn loco no.5: SPB train with electric power: Wilderswil Station (the advert for the celebrations on the RH poster): Rear coach of special BOB train The two steam locos at Zweilutschinen: No. 1067 disappears up the yard at Zweilutschinen: (EDIT I think it might be running round it's train) The vintage bus outside the SPB depot at Wilderswil: If I find any more negs with railways on I will post them. Cheers Keith
