  1. Why would they just dismiss RMweb? Surely it's in their long-term interest to get to the bottom of any concerns.
  2. I thought "Little Wicket's" review was very fair. He seemed to have almost the exact same problems that Sam had on his second model.
  3. "Had" to go clothes shopping with my wife into Poole. 🤪 However, I just chanced to go into one of the discount bookshops, and came out with a book on the LMS Turbo------ loco.
  4. Still on a shipping theme. Just been having a chat with our neighbour. He's off on the maiden voyage of the new Cunard liner Queen Anne, leaving Southampton at 9pm tonight. He said he's doubled the budget for the firework display as they depart. I told him he'd be popular with dog owners in the city... I couldn't resist mentioning icebergs too, in rather poor ttaste. I said it must be a hard job, but he said someone had to do it.
  5. Another quiet day at Aston-on-Trent...
  6. On election nights I usually stay up and watch the results come in on the TV. But last night, as I knew there wouldn't be many results until today or tomorrow, I went to bed, put in my earphones and listened to the radio. Some interesting conversations; one even got a bit heated. The programme broke off for the shipping forecast just before 1am. Can't remember if I've ever listened to it all the way through. In a way it's quite melodic; I tried to visualise travelling clockwise around the coast, starting in the far north, as it was read out. When you think it's finished, then come the inshore water reports and then the forecast. I must have fallen asleep, then awoke at 3am still with the radio on and my earphones in... Called it a day after that.
  7. And the lamps are just that; lamps not headlights. On the LMS the lamps were black. This continued on the LMR until c1961 when white ones became more common. This wasn't a hard or fast "rule"; white lamps could be seen earlier. It'll be interesting what colour they are on the BR versions of the Black Five. And will the earlier logo-liveried one be different from the ones with the later crest. PS Thanks to daltonparva for his review. Anyone else want to tell us about their model?
  8. Three books arrived in the post today, and only one was about ----ways! The others were on canals and local history.
  9. Yesterday, all Hornby's troubles seemed so far away... Help! I need to change my loco lamp positions... Imagine there's an effective loco/tender connection. It's easy if you try...
  10. As someone noted above, there have been precious few photos of the model on RMweb by those buying it. If someone on here has a model, how is it? So far, we only have an anodyne magazine "review" ansd some YouTube offerings to go on.
  11. My final thoughts... Pros: 1. The model looks excellent. Maybe a few glue marks but weathering would remedy that. 2. The bowed running plate. Obviously the straighter the better, but it doesn't look THAT bad. On looking at photos of Stanier locos, they are not always perfectly straight anyway. 3. Running (when you can get it to) appears smooth, controllable, and with reasonable gearing. Cons: 1. Those lamps. I think that's been fully discussed. 2. Loco/tender connection. Clearly not fit for purpose. Easy enough to ditch the present arrangement (especially if you're not bothered about the lamps) and hard wire between the two. The prototype have hose connections between loco and tender, so wires no big deal. Also making a new (closer) drawbar shouldn't be that difficult. 3. Price. As I model the Midland Division of the LMS/LMR then a Class 5 is an essential element. Would I buy this one at £200+? Not as it stands. Which is a shame, as Hornby could've had a real winner here.
  12. Thanks Keith that certainly looks like one. I've use the more colloquial term 3-way/4-way; am I correct in that these were termed tandem turnouts? If so, how would a tandem that diverged three ways be differentiated from one diverging four ways, in terms of nomenclature?
  13. My youngest is watching "Britain's Got Talent". Not wishing to be sexist, ageist, racist, etc but why is there an act from Japan currently performing?
  14. Sam's done another review of the Black Five, with a replacement. Check it out: (2) Let's Try Again | Hornby's New Black 5 Take 2 | Unboxing & Re-Review - YouTube
