  1. That's a nice job Pete. And demonstrates that the Hornby body still holds it own with a bit of work, well done.
  2. I was just wondering if there are any UK-based retailers who supply the range of Archer Transfers, and more specifically those who tend to have a presence at model railway shows. I've been to quite a few exhibitions lately, but no luck so far. I know there are US-based sellers on eBay but I'd prefer to see them in the flesh, and then purchase accordingly. Thanks in advance E3109
  3. Believe it or not, I've found that a thin smear of Uhu is just the job, although I can't comment on whether or not it would deteriorate over time. Also once the outer brick lamination is set in place (weight it down if possible while curing) you can also run a thin bead of superglue around window apertures etc. I've never used the specialist superglues for this so far, the stuff found in pound shops is more than adequate. Apply with a pin or similar. Agreed that Mek type solvents, Plastic Weld and so on can cause warps and bubbles. Best avoided if you want to keep your building square, generally speaking these otherwise excellent products often seem too harsh for this.
  4. I recall an in-law-to-be, who having lived through the Demokratik Kampuchea era 1975-79 telling me that while you cannot eat gold, you can certainly use it to buy another week's existence. Good old XAU saved countless lives during that time. Fiat Money wouldn't have got you anywhere, as the KR abolished it. But being the dirty hypocrites they were, they were more than happy to take backhanders in Chinese Yuan and USD, and clearly as the KR were 'incorruptible' they would never even consider taking bribes from the plebs. Oh no. Think about this guys, when you continue down your path of currency bans.
  5. Gibbo well said, Njee saying that a "sample size of one" is, if I may be so bold a tad patronising, I never claim to speak for others but I can assure you that I'm not alone in thinking that way. We, as members of this or any forum are always going to be a sample size of one, as you put it, when stating our views. Anyway I'm off into town to buy a few sovs, for when the SHTF (joking).
  6. Indeed Njee, I realise that most people don't do what I do but what I don't get, is why my long-standing habits are becoming verboten. Am I acting unlawfully? No, of course not. So stop the interrogations when all I want, is the paper money I earned from doing my job. Is that too much to ask?
  7. Njee all I was saying is that my preference towards cash payments (even if via PayPoint) shouldn't be deemed as 'suspicious' by the powers that be, yes indeed I withdraw the majority of my hard-earned each month but that's the way I like it, and what I'm used to. For the record I am opposed to a cashless society, maybe that deserves another thread but I have my reasons, I know I'm not alone in that.
  8. So if I have this right, you're saying that by paying my monthly expenses via cash rather than via direct debits/standing orders is extreme? I'm confused here, I really don't get why you don't seem to approve of cash payments. And for the rest of us, there's always PayPoint. Council tax, gas water leccy and so on. Yeah these are electronic payments, but paid via cash, seems to work pretty well.
  9. Using cash is "extreme"? FGS it's been the default for centuries, and long may it remain so. As you mention doommongery, can I just say that my Khmer missus has elderly family members that are still alive due to the fact that they were able to bribe Khmer Rouge cadres with a bit of gold, concealed on their body, in order to receive rice backhanders on the quiet. The Khmer Rouge abolished cash, that's probably all you need to know about those Devils but I can provide links to books if you wish. How would you be able to bribe your way into living another day or week with e-commerce? I'd love to know.
  10. Njee I don't have a problem with any of it, if you prefer to use contactless or cards that's up to the individual. What I really object to though, is the presumption that those who prefer to use cash are "up to no good". I do hope there's a middle ground, somewhere. Been telling my niece for years that she needs to do stuff such as buying gold, anything really that keeps the HMG Noses away. I've never bought into the premise that if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear. We all have plenty to hide and if you don't get that then I truly despair.
  11. Interesting that you assume my personal views Justin, however I'll let that pass. By the way I haven't said 'snowflake' anywhere in this thread, much as I'm tempted to. Nor do I read 'news' papers very much, apart from the Sunday Sport, possibly the only paper that's worth a gander even if the copy is five years old. Spare me the sob stories if you don't mind, we were all young once (I still think I'm 18, wish I was) and to paraphrase your comment, I find it tragic that you're prepared to denigrate a whole generation on the basis of 'you know best'. I find it absolutely appalling that you cite a case of rape in order to justify your post, sorry mate wind it in forthwith, you are WELL out of order. Promote your e-commerce stuff and your electronic money agenda all you like mate, I don't have an issue with that. BUT, I request that you do not assume everyone outside your generation welcomes it. They don't. Well I don't. I want the flexibility of cash.
  12. Probably true though... Funny how those who are older rarely resort to the "I'm offended by that" card, because they know it's a weak card to play. And those who haven't even taken it out of the wrapper just yet are Offended In Perpetuity, because their 'teachers' told them they have rights, without adding that they also have responsibilities. What a mess.
  13. Each to their own, but I do it regularly. Same when I go on holiday. If I lose it then it's my fault. Touch wood, never happened. I suppose my overall point is not so much a debate about the pros and cons of cash via other payment methods, rather I'm asking why cash is frowned upon. Cash is great, personally I love it and although I make occasional card transactions the 'folding' has always been my preferred option.
  14. Don't use banks? How is that even possible these days when pretty much every employee is paid via BACS.Believe me, I wouldn't bother with banks if I still got an actual pay packet, stuffed with ponies. By the way, it isn't "your" Apple Pay, the clue is in the name. Wrist Microchip implants next or what.
  15. Hi Geoff, I'm in my 40s (just about) and I'm quite a big fella so 'of certain age' wouldn't apply. I felt sorry for the teller but I will pursue this, if you can't access your hard earned wages without being interrogated then we really have hit rock bottom. I don't mean any disrespect to those who work(ed) in banks, people have to earn a crust but the irony of banks carrying out money laundering checks, is duly noted (Fractional Reserve etc).
  16. After the Manchester MRS show recently we decided it was time for a pint. I'm happy with Guinness but my colleagues are more into real ale (some of which I don't mind). Anyway we spent a while trying to find this brew pub, it's one of the newer sort where they're hidden away within an anonymous building on an industrial estate. A sort of hipster's paradise, if you will. So having found the gaff, we traipsed upstairs only to be presented with a sign that read "No cash, only Contactless", it was at that point to a man we turned around and left (and politely told the doorman why). I suppose that the saddest part to report, is that the place was rammed. Do the youngsters know what they might be letting themselves in for, I do wonder.
  17. Apollo sir that painting of 27004 is just superb, not seen it before so much obliged.
  18. Wow, in essence 'third rail in the sky', and presumably untensioned. What an outdated concept! (I'm being facetious of course) Ps Sir Vincent Raven
  19. Torper while of course I respect your position, as I said earlier on I've done nothing wrong, that's why I started the thread. "Nothing to hide, then nothing to fear" is a poor argument (not that I'm suggesting you've said that) and even poorer when the politicians go out of their way to prevent those who they supposedly serve find out what they're up to. I'm aware that this may be straying into politics territory so I'll hold back with respect to forum rules. But I genuinely fear that the population at large is being beasted big time and perhaps it will only get worse, given what Dudders, Mike and other expats have said regarding what goes on on the continent.
  20. Clearwater regarding Woodhead Tunnel 3, it was reputed to be the only Pennine bore to be capable of taking 9'6" containers at that time. Moving forward, I'd love to see MSW reopened in my lifetime but sadly I don't think that will happen, at least not in the near future. If it were to reopen the sensible route would be to bore the old tunnels out into one, to dimensions exceeding UIC standards. Would love to see this, but won't be holding my breath.
  21. I get that Meil, but my earnings are demonstratively provable to be a salary subject to PAYE, therefore I haven't the foggiest what their issue is. I do understand the issues such as old dears being scammed by dodgy builders and so on, and I fully agree that means should be in place to prevent that sort of thing. But it's obvious to the bank staff that I'm not in this category, so my objection is based upon their unwarranted delving. Not necessarily relevant, but I also asked about when my pension eventually gets paid, and how much notice was needed to withdraw should I choose to bank it via them. I'm not going into detail for obvious reasons but the same mentality prevailed, when I said that I could present a letter from the Pensions Dept when the time comes in order to withdraw funds the teller still went on about money laundering. Where will this end up, I do wonder sometimes!
  22. Funnily enough I did have a mental image of George Best in my head at the time!
  23. I suppose, the nutshell answer would be "politicians are rarely the railway's friend" (with a handful of honourable exceptions no doubt). Does anyone know if anything ever came out regarding the MSW closure? Ex Guide Bridge men I work(ed) with over the years have told me on many occasions that it wasn't a Tory or Labour thing, just that it was the Master Plan for many years and often linked to the M67 extension across the Pennines. I do wonder if an FOI Request is in order, 30 year rule maybe.
