  1. It’s been absolutely ages since I posted anything on here so it’s about bloody time that changed. Over the past few months I have been working away on various rtr conversions and kits. The most notablebeing a pair on ex lner c16’s. Both using Hornby adams radial chassis and m7 wheels and gwr county con rods and more. They run very smoothly. One is a much altered triang m7 body shell and the other is a nucast body on the Hornby chassis. B77FAB45-476B-4A6C-8AD9-18FD11713AAB.jpeg.b509b84b036eaa98751aace7c8617f8a.jpeg

Also I have finally finished my scratchbuilt pickersgill 4-4-0 and all it needs is some extra weight adding but. As it is it’ll pull a 4 coach train quite happily. I plan to make a second one but that ain’t now. 8DA00755-FB91-4D28-9164-A9A3D0D0B824.jpeg.e610d3ed2da297ebaeec2665880efc66.jpeg

I have also completely rebuilt a very old K’s ex caley 439 kit which was simply horrible when I got hold of. Was a tenner at a show in a junk box. Well now it’s looking pretty good and runs very nicely

    Good afternoon Gary,

You'll need a seven-car rake for the 'Queen of Scots' in Scotland in the summer of 1958 (except on Saturdays, when it was made up to eight). The consist for the Up train (leaving Glasgow Queen Street at 11.00 am) was Second Brake, Second Kitchen, First Parlour, First Kitchen, First Kitchen, Second Parlour and Second Brake - seven cars in total. Two further cars were added at Leeds, a First Kitchen and a Second Parlour. The set reversed at Leeds, though the pair of Leeds-only cars were always at the front, in both Up and Down trains. All these types have been available from Hornby in the past, but I'm told that the 1928 all-steel types (which the train was mainly made up of) are now as rare as hens' teeth and very expensive!

The number of cars in the rakes varied with each passing seasonal timetable - more usually, it was eight cars in Scotland and ten between Leeds and London. The consist altered, too. In 1959, the two Leeds-only cars were both Kitchens, First and Second respectively.

I've modelled the set as ten cars; appropriate for Little Bytham.

I built this train getting on for 30 years ago from a combination of Hornby donors, Comet sides and MJT bogies and fittings. Ian Rathbone painted the lot. I also made the loco (which he, too, painted). I made a couple of the cars to be pre-1928 types, wooden-bodied but clad in aluminium, with curved roof rainstrips and angle trussing.

You mention mental health in a previous post; something I can speak of from personal experience! At times when the 'Black Dog' has 'bitten' me, I've been unable to do any modelling. However, once its 'grip' is loosened, and I return to making things (even though it's incredibly difficult to start with), then the benefits of having a constructional hobby are revealed, and good mental health is restored.

    Regards,

    Tony.

Thank you for the information on the pullmans. I have had a look and I see what you mean about the prices for even the older pullmans never mind the newer tooling. I have seen an older Hornby train pack of the Q.o.S which may be a starting point.

  3. Ohh while I’m on here…

    Tony

I am looking to make up a representation of the Queen of Scot’s circa 1958/9 before the mk1 pullmans made an appearance. Members of my club are looking to make a model of Edinburgh St Margaret’s, well the running shed side at least, with the main lines running around the front of the depot and the north side of the lines left to the imagination….

I already have the Elizabethan but the Q.o.S did pass the depot and it would be something different in amongst the blood and custard and or maroon stock. Plus I know it can be a relatively short rake which would keep the pennies and pounds happy, and the wife too!
I’ve seen and remember that you have a rake on Little Bytham. Could you possibly pass on a list of stock which would be suitable.

    many thanks

  4. I finally finished (well almost save for coal and a light weathering) my Pickersgill 4-4-0 54486. The loco is a scratch built body on a re-wheeled triang L1 chassis and a much modified GEM Glen tender. The loco happily hauls a 4-5 coach train which is more than enough for what I intend it for ie a branch line loco where large loads will not happen. This is a good thing as there isn’t any space left inside the loco to add any more extra weight.

I appreciate that this reply is rather late in the day but I have only just come across this post. The train referred to in the previous posts is in fact the North - Eastern Region's train. It sprayed the Scottish Region as well as the NE Region during the time I was involved with it between 1964 and 1967. I have a number of photos which I would be happy to pass on if they are of use. In the meantime here are two photos to give you an idea

Apologies I havnt logged into rmweb in aaages. That’s great thank that would be a help. I’m just trying to make something a little bit different. I’ve recently seen some footage of a weed killing train at Crief in the late 50’s made from a couple of WD tender and some inks lnwr coaches. Then another made from some ex k3 tenders and some very scruffy looking Gresleys. There are possibilities with both but I’ve just moved house a month ago so any modelling can wait for thnow. While I re make a modelling area AGAIN haha

I have just popped an enquiry over to Railtex with the artwork as below.  I will post again if they are willing and able to do it.

This is for the LMS period 1 style; with a serif font.  The period 2 style is not quite the same but 247 Developments used to produce some transfers for this; I don't know if these are still available.

Have we had any update on the Loch names by any chance?

Thanks for the advice on the chassis, how about the dome and chimney, please as Lochgorm Models seem to be closed forever now, perhaps?

Aw the dome and chimney I couldn’t tell the origins of them as they were given to me by a friend but I think they’re from a djh loco kit. Failing that chimneys can be made using brass tube and washers etc.

This looks like a very tempting conversion was yours's based around the Hornby or Oxford Rails Adams Radial, please, also where did you source the chimney and dome from, please?

    Thanks,

Sorry I havnt been on rmweb very often of late. It’s the oxford Adams I used for the conversion. As the Hornby one has more weight which is part of the chassis and would need filed off. The oxford model on the other hand has less or infact nothing that needs removal, plus the boiler is in one piece which saves having to make a new boiler.

  9. Just a quick one, does know if 60045 Lemberg even travelled, or is likely to have travelled over the Waverley, I know various other english based a3’s did so but I’m unsure about 60045. I have recently got hold of a kit built example of 60045 which needed the chassis and motion rebuilt but the body just needed touching up. So I’d rather not change the name and number because they’ve been nicely done.

  10. Well that’s my c16 conversion complete. I had the misfortune of having to line it out TWICE as the original set of lining I used, the adhesive on the hmrs pressfix transfers had a strange reaction with the paint and came off....anyway a second lining out and the reaction had still happened for some reason but not as bad (you can see a slight bubble effect under the tank side lining) but that’s only when viewed close up. In time I will re do it with model master or fox transfers but it’ll do at the moment.

  11. Well that’s my c16 mostly complete and test run at my local club tonight, some adjustment needed with the coupling rods binding slightly but that was due to using finer Hornby hex nuts on the older Hornby county con rods. Some filing and cleaning up alter and problem solved.

  12. A lot more progress on my m7 to c16 conversion, the loco is now looking more complete, tonight I added all the plumbing, lubricator and handrails, Washinhoos pump and tacked on the cab roof, this being temporary as I intend to add a back head and cab floor etc. Also swapped the Adams radial long bogie for a slightly shorter patriot bogie and fitted false frames to get rid of the daylight between the running plate and bogie Just awaiting Hornby county coupling rods and then fit brakes and a few other jobs to do before painting. And I’ve decided that the identity will be 67494 which was a long time Edinburgh St Margaret’s loco.

  13. More progress on my m7 C16 conversion with a Hornby Adams radial chassis used and modified to take Romford drivers etc. Just a push fit at the moment as there’s lots to do yet but I popped it on the track after removing some weight above the rear drivers to allow the bigger wheels to fit. Also opened up the bearings and it runs fine.

Nice job in hiding the joins in the bunker.

Filler and different grades of abrasive paper?

Aye I used revell fillet and wet and dry, although I’ve since noticed that the sides have warped slightly to they’ll need bracing or they will crack again.

  15. Another one started last Thursday, converting a triang m7 to a north British C16. I spent last Thursday removing everything infront of the tanks, removing the boiler and extending the tanks and bunker. Tonight fitted the boiler, new cab front and rear sheets, together with the chimney done and safety valves.
