    Hello.

Something that I have been doing for myself is building an index of the contents of the BRB diagram books on the Barrowmore Model Railway Group website.

My main interest is wagons, so that is where I have started. So far I have indexed books 300 (part 1), 320 (parts 1-3) and PO Stock (parts 1-3).

This was done with the thought of kit building, kit bashing or scratch building stock from common components e.g. if I have a particular underframe available then what can I put on top of it? Can I build something a bit different with the pieces I have or can obtain? etc.

I'm not aware of any similar index, apart from the pages in some of the books themselves, but I'm sure someone will point out if I am following a path previously travelled.

Any errors in the transcription are all mine although I cannot guarantee that the data they point to is correct :-) The usual statements about working from photographs of the chosen prototype etc. apply. If anything doesn't seem right, it should be fairly simple to verify whether the discrepancy is in the index or not. I'm happy to receive error reports with respect to the file that I have created.

There is some duplication of diagrams, but being an index if there are multiple destinations then there probably should be multiple entries.

Perhaps this will be of some use to others,

    David.

Addendum: Updated the Index with additional entries.

    Hello.

Hopefully I haven't bitten off more than I can chew, and I'm not entirely sure that a blog is the best place to share this information, but I'm going to give it a go.

I've been reading old issues of Rail Enthusiast magazine and was jotting down information which I thought was of interest to me and so I considered sharing it.

This I will attempt to do in six tables, one for each topic that was of interest to me. These are:

    1. Firsts and Lasts, i.e. the first or last time that something happened. Examples include the introduction or withdrawal of stock, and the opening and closing of stations, depots or routes.

    2. Prototypes. The original intention was to focus on the prototype diesel and electric locomotives that existed prior to the Modernisation Plan but it has been extended to include prototypes on an ongoing basis as well as some of the less successful Modernisation Plan classes. I've also included some instances where individual class members were modified, e.g. 37292 and 47901.

    3. Liveries. The modifications to the corporate BR blue (or green) plus the one-off liveries that in some cases only lasted until the next Works visit.

    4. Formations. The intention was to record examples of prototypically short or 'unusual' formations that would be useful to modellers, although this has extended to some longer formations, particularly for HSTs.

    5. Images. A graphical miscellaneous bucket. Pictures that I thought others might be interested in.

    6. Miscellanea. The snippets of information, some of which may be useful, some of which may bring a wry smile to those that know or knew better.

As far as I know, I am not trampling on any toes by doing this, but if I am duplicating work that others have done, then please say, so that I might go do something else instead.

My sources of information are the old Rail Enthusiast and RAIL magazines from the 1980s and 1990s. As far as I know, I am OK with respect to copyright as I am not duplicating vast tracts of information.

Please note that this is NOT intended to be a comprehensive index of British Railways activity or a comprehensive index of Rail Enthusiast magazine. It is what interested me and what I thought might interest others.

To date I have reached the end of 1982, so the first 18 months or so of the magazines. The intention is that I will post updates when I reach the end of each year, but I don't know when that will be. It'll happen when it happens.

If anyone finds this useful, then it will have served its purpose.

This table covers "firsts and lasts", i.e. the first time that something happened or the last time something happened. This could be introduction or withdrawal of stock, opening and closing of stations, depots or routes, and possibly others.

The table is sorted by Date, as this seemed most appropriate. Dates are given in the form YYYY.MM.DD.
To aid sorting, I've used '00' in the date fields where the information wasn't given, i.e. a date of 1981 would be 1981.00.00, July 1981 would be 1981.07.00 and 21st July 1981 would be 1981.07.21.
As another aid to sorting, I have used the TOPS Class where at all possible, even for those locomotives that never made it to TOPS and/or were frequently known by another name. Therefore Class 35 Hymeks, Class 55 Deltics etc. will be seen.
The numerical prefix to the Issue date is another aid for sorting on my behalf. From memory, the first edition of the magazine to appear with a number as well as a date was Issue 50.
Presumably all the information that was published was believed to be true and accurate at the time. Occasionally this proved not to be the case. Where I am aware, I have noted where information was later disproved or subsequently amended to reflect reality.
Any queries can always be posted in the comments section. I can't always guarantee to know the answer - or have the time to answer - but with the references given hopefully anybody who happens to have this information available could help out with clarifications. Please note that I have no means of scanning pages, so requests for copies of any articles or individual pages will go unfulfilled. Sorry.
There may be some duplication of entries with other tables as some information conceivably falls across multiple categories. I have tried to minimise this.
I don't mind having typos etc. pointed out :-)

It would appear that I can't post HTML code here - it only appears as HTML code, not the display. Therefore, I've attached the table as a file.

This table is titled Prototypes. The original intention was to focus on the prototype diesel and electric locomotives that existed prior to the Modernisation Plan but it has been extended to include prototypes on an ongoing basis, e.g. Class 252 HST, Class 370 APT, Class 210 DEMU, Class 140 DMU, LEV railbus etc. as well as some of the less successful Modernisation Plan classes, e.g. 21, 23, 28. I've also included some instances where individual members were modified, e.g. 37292 and 47901.
The table is sorted by Text, as I assumed that most readers would be seeking information about a particular Class or individual locomotive.
Dates are given in the form YYYY.MM.DD. I've used '00' in the date fields where the information wasn't given, i.e. a date of 1981 would be 1981.00.00, July 1981 would be 1981.07.00 and 21st July 1981 would be 1981.07.21.

Where there are pictures referenced, I've tried to include as much information as was given at the time (photographer, location, subject, date) as some of these may have appeared in other places - even online - since then.
Any queries can always be posted in the comments section. This table is titled Formations. The intention was to record examples of prototypically short or 'unusual' formations that would be useful to modellers, although this has extended to some longer formations, particularly for HSTs.

The table is sorted by Text, for no good reason other than most of the other tables were. Not sure whether sorting by Date (or even Issue/Page) would be more beneficial.
