  1. Perhaps a complete kit would be a better idea.

Then at least the total price is known from the start and novices like myself wouldn't miss buying a vital part, although at £7 and axle plus gears and muffs and then motor etc, the complete chassis cost is going to be somewhere near the cost of the grafar donor

It's a shame the association can't sell completed chassis, I understand that some people enjoy building locos but it all seems to daunting to me, I'd rather spend £75 on a ready built chassis I know is going to work.

  2. Do the 2mm conversion kits come with everything need to convert the locos, inc wheels?

  3. I visited the Uckfield MR show last week and and got to see Tucking Mill and Wentfordbridge Goods depot in the flesh and was fortunate to meet both Jerry and John who were excellent company and my thanks to both for the advice and encouragement given.

  4. I spent the afternoon taking the final set of photos for an ngauge layout I've just finished before heading back to an unfinished 2mm layout

Dapol's new Westerns are beautiful and GraFar's new departmental BG's are pretty good as apart from having HST legends rather than S&T

  5. Having been delighted with my quartet of 22s to date (two blue, two green headcode SYP) I decided to invest in a fifth to include the green headcode disc SYP in the fleet.  It duly arrived today.

I am quite comfortable now dismantling the cab assembly to fit a crew and internal headcodes both of which will be done in due course.  The problem with D6327 - and the first real problem I have had with any of the current Dapol hydraulics - is that when placed on the track it shorted.

Off came the body and I noted the blanking plate was on upside down compared with the rest of them.  In fact the entire circuit board is different and so is the internal illumination.  The guts seem to have been significantly reworked since the early releases.

The blanking plate wouldn't go on any other way (there's only one way a 21-pin plate can fit) and it didn't appear to be the source of the problem anyway.  Just in case I swapped plates with an earlier 22 which all came with 22-pin blanking plates on 21-pin units meaning they can be plugged in either way around.  The older one ran perfectly with the new plate and the new one still shorted .....

I have now checked over all the wiring and allowed for the different configuration of circuit board.  Compared with the older model the new one appears to be cross-wired from one bogie to the motor with a red where a black should be and vice versa.  I can fix that easily but not today as the soldering iron is packed away (along with the entire workbench) for my imminent trip home.  I might be able to find time later in the week otherwise it's a job for when I'm back.

    They're still nice models.

Should you really have to fiddle about like this on something that cost you over £100?

If you bought a mobile phone or a TV, would you still take them apart and try and fix the problem, or would you return them under guarantee to the shop you bought them from?

Trouble is, all the time people fiddle and solve the problem, the manufacture remains blissfully unaware there is a problem, however if the they get umteen returns, then they become aware quickly as this starts to cost them money.

  6. The traverser is impressive Nick,

I'm currently working on an ngauge shunting plank which is near completion

and after that I have 3 different 2mm layouts in various states of construction to complete (all no more than trackwork at the moment)
I find flitting between projects keeps me motivated

  7. Hi Rich,

welcome to the debate, all comments are welcome.

I agree my video is pretty poor, but the prototype in the video is just that, a prototype to prove the theory, which others have done on this thread far better than I have.

perhaps you could post a video of your layout demonstrating the ultra-smooth running at low speeds

    Rgds,

    Stuart

  8. Having spent several hours reading the threads at freerails.com (thanks for the link, davetheroad), it answered my question re: international cooperation - Brits, Yanks, Germans all contributing there!  It would also seem that DelTang is working collaboratively (and speedily) with model rail customers towards a common set of requirements, and solutions.

All of which has led me to taking the plunge!  Yesterday I ordered an 'ALBA' kit from Smallbrook with the appropriate donor loco for conversion to BP/RC.  Unfortunately, despite being the far side of 50, these will have to go to Santa to be delivered on Christmas Day...  Best to humour the other half, I suppose.

By the time I get to unwrap these goodies, I will have put together a test track and gathered together all the tools and bits I've been buying for the last couple of years and so will be ready to begin the conversion, which I will cover in a separate thread.

In email conversation with Michael from Smallbrook I learned that he is a fan of BP/RC having built and run a 1/32 ng battery powered layout some years ago.  He pointed out that the Smokey Joe chassis used by many of his kits usually have a 3v motor with extra resistors to operate on 12v, so potentially good candidates for battery operation.  He thinks there may be an option to offer a hollow boiler for some kits to create battery space.

    Semi Fast

Welcome to the cause and good luck with your conversion, be sure to let us know how you get on

  9. Welcome to the future and this thread.

For what it's worth, I agree with many of you guys on here - this technology is the future.  Is anybody trying to define standards yet?  Is there any international cooperation?

I wish, we can't even get the likes of Bachman, Dapol or Hornby to take an interest let alone reach international agreement

  10. Due to model supply delays from China that seem to get worse and worse, I decided that I should buy a Dapol class 22 before they disappear. I got as far as putting my credit card details into the form but then got cold feet and decided to read through these posts.

My opinion now is that this is a can of worms and best left alone. What is the general opinion about the running and relability of these class 22 loco's?

    Thanks.

Dapol do not have a great reliability record at the moment but they are aware of this and are trying to make amends.

From the recent personnel changes and yesterdays press release from Dapol re KMR it makes me think there is more to all this than meets the eye.

However back to your question.....at the moment You pays your money and takes your chances, at least there is now a UK dealership that can repair your loco if something does go wrong, however make sure you follow the oiling instructions otherwise they may well blame you for mis-use. as happened to me with my class 121.

  11. Check this link out for my first conversion of a Farish class 08 to battery power and radio control.

It works really well and i am so impressed that I am going ahead with other locos etc.

    Nice one

One day ALL model locomotives will be powered by a rechargeable battery and controlled by a radio link

As I said in my original post on this thread, with larger locos the battery's could be made into the shape of the chassis and then there would be no need for a trailing battery/Transmitter/Receiver in a wagon or carriage.

I think the next step you could try, is seeing if you could reduce the battery/Transmitter/Receiver into a shunters truck?

Good effort though, well done and Keep up the good work

    Rgds

  12. Will the excitement never cease.... I promise I won't post a picture of each piece of pointwork that emerges from the detritus that is my desk but this lump is quite significant as its Bath Junction. The three tracks at the left hand end are, front to back, mainline into Bath/out of Bath/line off S&D into Midland bridge yard. The reason I've not described the lines into Bath as up or down in the normal way is because they are both. Trains off the S&D went 'up' to Bath. Trains leaving Bath for the Midlands were also described as 'up'.

Please note there are no drink glasses in view!

    Nice!
