Three more, all b&w this time:
D1018 Western Buccaneer passing Reading with a down express on 1st June 1973
D1020 Western Hero entering Exeter SD with the down 'Cornish Rivera Ltd' (or should that be 'Cornish Riviera Express'? - I don't have a contemporary WR timetable to check, but I noted it in my book as 'CRL') which I joined here and travelled on to Plymouth, on 8th July 1970
D1022 Western Sentinel, with D1010 Western Campaigner coupled behind, prepares to leave Plymouth with an inter-regional train from the west on 29th May1974. I did not make a note if the second loco was 'dead' or if it was a genuine 'double-header' - any ideas, anyone?
Cheers
Trevor
Great photos Trevor - thanks for posting, and if you have more, please keep them coming. The shot of D1022 and D1010 is almost certainly 1M74 1400 (ish) Penzance - Birmingham. This was usually double headed, and quite often with Westerns. The time on the clock is spot on for their arrival. They would both be removed at Plymouth for a Peak or 47 on to Birmingham...

Hi Mick,
I'm looking at producing a layout loosely based on Hull, from 1965-1975, I can get most of the required info from WTTs, but I'm trying to find which specific diesels were used on the non-DMU services to allow realistic running. There are a large number of photos from the 1970's which allow identification, but there seems to be a lack of photos from 1965-70, apart from the standard 37's based at Dairycoates
Hi Andy,
Don't forget the ex WR Class 14 diesel hydraulics which were briefly transferred to Dairycoates 67/68.....operated both singly and double-headed.
Cheers, Steve

It is indeed planned to be out in Autumn 2017. Enjoy volume 1. ps Westerns were the best locos ever built (don't tell the Churchward Moguls but they were special too!)
Looking forward to getting stuck into Volume 1 very soon Freddie. As a newly arrived resident in Cotford St Luke, I have plenty to learn about the Devon & Somerset. Westerns? - agreed.....;-)

Just put in my order with the publishers for volume 1 - I've been waiting for this book for a long time, and hope it will have some new pictures of Dulverton I've not seen before.
Up to now the only books specifically about the Devon and Somerset are Middleton Press's "Taunton to Barnstaple: Country Railway Routes" by Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith, and Colin Maggs's book "The Taunton to Barnstaple Line", Locomotion Papers 126 from Oakwood Press (long out of print).
The book's website says that it is now published, but I think what it means is that Part 1 is published. I couldn't see any indication of when Part 2 is due.
One of the good folks on the Lightmoor stand at the NEC today said that Volume 2 is due about this time next year......looking forward to getting stuck into Vol 1....

As a kid born and raised in Driffield, I'm really enjoying watching this thread - many thanks to all contributors. My 'holy grail' photo-wise is to see a shot of a Class 14 hydraulic somewhere between Beverly and Brid.....I don't suppose anyone has one that would be kind enough to post do they? Thanks.....

Unusually, despite searching my notes, I'm unable to provide any info on this one - other than it's Cardiff General, Platform 1, and an up Padd.

Thanks for posting this one Brian.I'm thinking it's D1008 Western Harrier. Circa 1973?

It has been suggested that I ought to cross-post a couple of images that I have in my own thread - so here goes.
July 1966, Liskeard, tatty hydraulics !!
Regards,
John Isherwood.
A couple of interesting shots here John.
I'm not sure that there is any significance in the livery on the Thousand, but the Warship looks as though it has been kicked out into traffic part way through a repaint!
Martin Street confirms the id of the Warship as D864 Zambesi

Gents, I have a duplicate copy of the slide of the Thousand at St Blazey with the clay wagon. (I think the Class 20 Loco Society issued it as a Colour Rail 'reject') . The loco is D1031 and the date is stated to be 30/5/73.

D7011 - Swindon ?

Great images, most especially those of the hydraulics.
Further to Geoff's point just above, D1022 was in Swindon between April and December 1972, so helping to confirm his suggested date.

John, I was going to post something very similar. I have three Dapol Westerns and also three Class 22s. All run (and look) perfect. I wouldn't hesitate to buy further Dapol hydraulics should the occasion arise.

So, back to the Dapol model. Hattons and Royal Mail must be working overtime because mine arrive at lunchtime today (Sunday). My account on the ehattons site has yet to be updated to say that it has been dispatched. I unpacked it later this afternoon and it has now completed a couple of hours running-in on the rollers. Having it running at eye level has given me an opportunity to just sit and look at the detail. It really is an excellent piece of work.
Any problems? Well, yes, one of the etched builders plates is missing and there is no sign of it in the box. Either I'll just have to run it one way round or cobble up a replacement. It just doesn't seem worthwhile to send it back just for this. My only other doubt is that it looks a bit wobbly on the rollers, as if one or more of the wheels are not quite concentric. I'll just have to see when I try it on my HO layout after I get a DCC chip fitted. In the long term this won't be a worry as mine is destined to be converted to P4, hopefully when Exactoscale decide to go ahead with a conversion set.
Nick
Nick, mine was a bit wobbly on the rolling road, but is now a super runner when on the layout. Also, when purchasing yesterday at Warley, I noticed that someone brought one back to that retailer with, I believe, a 'missing' worksplate. All in all though, a smashing model. Congrats to all at Dapol.

I do rather fancy the idea of an 0 gauge minimum space layout based on the Hemyock branch. A class 22, a few 6 wheel milk tanks and maybe the one passenger coach (did the diesels work passenger trains on this line?) could really tempt me away from 00.
Ed
That sounds like a great idea Ed. I'm pretty sure that the diesels didn't work passenger services on the Hemyock branch, (but nothing to stop you using some modellers 'licence' !).
Cheers

Trevor, Really enjoying seeing these photos. D1069 on 4A13 is the 1445 Penzance Paddington perishables, a long standing Thousand hauled train in the west country.....Steve
