pre-grouping and never-grouped narrow gauge

Padre is doing a field service for Armistice Day. He’s forgotten his stole though. Very remiss. Based on a relative of one of my choir, the Padre was a missionary, first around Stokesley in a horse drawn wagon, then in Canada and America. Plans are afoot to build him a horse drawn chapel/living wagon -

New sky sheet fitted. Needs to be tighter, and I’m thinking about painting clouts on the billows… however a 4’ sky is much better, makes the layout feel less cramped. I can have a taller castle too. Huzzah! -

In other news, major work is progressing to turn the end to end layout into a continuous run. Partly because I am very happy for the railcar to trundle around with just a basic switch, and partly because I like watching trains run. if I’m honest, my engineering skills are pretty basic, so if something gets moving , I’m loathe to stop it! -

Lord Charles has decided that the railcar should reflect when it was built, so some discrete cyphers have arrived. Well discrete in the Queen Mary maybe… given that these were feted as “lapel pins” I can only imagine we are due a period of 70s lapels! Genuinely larger than my partially sighted badge. There is a joke there somewhere. Anyway, his lordship approves and has had one of the gunners fit them. -

Also available in green. For those days when there aren’t many passengers… Currently forward gear only, which is prototypical. This loco is causing a rethink to a continuous loop… -

they are indeed the inspiration. I felt there was no need to make figures when the Playmobil ones were so perfect -

Love them… we have a zoo kicking about, so elephants are a possibility… I’ll have to dig out the dogs and so on too. I was thinking about using bits of their castle too, but, frankly cardboard is more in my price range.. -

Maybe I need a chip wagon somewhere.. And two seagulls? I get more than that in our garden and we’re miles from the sea… -

Starting on some Whitby style cliffs for one end of the harbour. I loathe polystyrene, but there we go. lighthouse sort of works, certainly adequately for me. I also have some lovely essential oils that smell like the seaside, seaside sound effects and, of course Ronnie and Reggie seagull. largish Playmobil boat hanging around waiting for some water… -

Thank you! And the kits make excellent ways to design your own; I’ve got about half and half now. -

The stone wall finally finished. That was supposed to be easier than a wooden fence. Yeah. Right. also we have Ronnie and Reggie on the lookout for chips -

The harbour has its first customer. Will need painting and detailing, with my own fishermen, but it’s a start -

Yay the stone wall is done, apart from station signs, lamps, a bench or two. we also have Ronnie and Reggie the seagulls, looking out for chips… I’ve since painted the rather nice 3D printed chimney pots, too- 248 replies

It’s tempting, son and I have enjoyed doing this in Scarborough. However, we will be rockpooling instead. Easier to model I think! -

So… we now have most of the harbour; cliffs and rock pools at the other end. It’s about 6ftx1ft and nicely dwarfs the rolling stock. The tide will be out, with just a few fishing boats lying drunkenly waiting for the water.. you don’t get much railway for your space, but boy does it feel real. I want a recording of seagulls and some ozone aftershave :D -

I’m an attempt to avoid the bl**dy wall.. we now have a harbour, or some of it. About 6ft long and 1ft tall, it is going to take some work, but looks solid enough. The tide will be out, with a couple of little fishing boats at funny angles and rock pools at the cliff end of the bay. Much easier than trying to make waves look right. Will be removable for woodworking. wondering how to make 16mm scale crabs and crab pots. Make your own jokes up :D -

I’ve seen people do that with slate. One day, maybe, but a) patience and maybe sanity and b) everything else in the model is painted card, so I’m trying to keep a continuity in styles, especially in particular buildings- it needs to be painted to match the stone station building. but yes, one day :) oh and Nearholmer, I really salute you for doing so! -

Original attempt at walling vs new version with thicker card. Should have done it right the first time, but the bottom layer is contributing nicely to the uneven surface. -

Need to get some modelling clay on the ‘oss, too. Far too non-cartoony for my livestock. -

This shows the current extent, and how much the skirts help and here is a closer view of the castle and beginnings of the port. Might be a while before the 1 o’clock gun fires from here!
