  1. That looks rather lovely.

I came across the kit on eBay and was intrigued by it as I'd not seen anything about it previously (I've rather been in an internet and model railway black hole since February when I broke my leg and ankle).

They scrub up nicely. I might have to order one at some point.

On a completely different topic -

Apparently JRR Tolkein refused point blank to let Disney Studios make The Lord of the Rings, as he felt that their films were infantile versions of classic stories and he didn't want that to happen to LotR. Here is a brilliant version of how it might have been if Disney had made the movie.

Having raised two children and been through the whole "charity shop video" phase I can recognise every character.

Except for Aragon. Can anyone tell me who Aragorn is based in?

Terry Pratchett had similar views about Disney getting anywhere near his work I believe. Mostly because he believed they ruined most of the fairy tales, if you've ever spoken to Jacqueline Simpson about Disney you will get a lecture from her about their antics and she worked closely with Terry for his folklore research.

Unfortunately we got the BBC America The Watch series, and not what was originally promised by the creative lead at the Discworld Conventions. Hopefully in time we'll get something more faithful, though Rob and Rhianna are very much involed with some upcoming projects which look promising.

On a tangent, Terry apparantly wanted a Fallout/Skyrim style Discworld game. He got lots of interest about it, but none of them would meet his requirements to get approval. He was very adament they needed to produce a game first to show him before he'd agree, very unworkable in reality.

On another tangent, Tolkein was the reason Terry put in his will that his hard drive with his unfinished work and 'wrong trouserlegs' as he called the alternative parts of book/stories had to be run over by a steamroller and destroyed. He didn't want anyone else writing his books after him and his daughter is adament at sticking with this, with the only new material to be ancillary books (diarys, etc) and tv/film adaptations.

  3. With the combination of Covid and moving in with my partner along with breaking my ankle and leg this year, all layout plans are effectively dead at present.

When the moving is all settled and I know how much realistic space I have, I'll revisit this layout idea and probably reduce it in size considerably.

The other plan Eversley Road southern region layout that we'd been planning is pretty much dead and won't go any further now, at least for now. It might reappear in the future, but I think it will be straight rather than an L like the last plans showed.

The focus if anything gets built will be on the Harton layout, but I have no idea when work might start as I currently cannot access most of the model railway items (they're either still at my flat or inaccessible without assistance due to my reliance on crutches at present).

    * Construction sand comes from estuarine and littoral environments. Desert sand is not as suitable - it's too smooth.

There has also been a shortage of sand suitable for electronics production, especially for chips such as cpus. Just one factor in the combination of price rises and short supply of many computer components as well as a number of basic components for electronics, effecting the supply and cost of new cars and things like raspberry pi which are in very short supply apparently with the prices being silly currently as a result.

Also related to this, noble gases such as freon are required for chip production. Guess which country is the leading supplier of and recently been hit with a cpu speed supply restriction from Taiwan...

On the subject of concrete, what is the alternative? Bricks require sand as well (maybe not the same sand?) and plastic is not really viable.

There are a lot of questions facing the world over the next couple of decades and how they get answered will have huge consequences.
