  4. Brian, After my last post on the runners/barriers I have found an old notebook, 3 of the HAA's noted at Carlisle were 360441, 360947 and 361253, can't read my own writing and the book is damaged for the others. Webbo
  5. For the runners/barriers, I remember seeing various formations at Carlisle and Crewe in the 80's, they were using ex HAA's without the tub, and stainless steel sheet welded on the chassis. Webbo

  9. What you have to bear in mind is the cost of a new belt as opposed to wrecking the engine. Usually it is bent valves and some slight damage to the piston crowns, but I have seen cases where the pistons are damaged beyond repair, and in some cases it has cracked the cyl head. As a retired motor mechanic I can quite honestly say it's not worth the risk. I have known cases where the new belt and fitting were quite reasonable, between £100 and £300, but the owners didn't have them changed and were faced with bills of over £1000. One customer at the garage where I worked scrapped a 5 year old car because he couldn't afford the repairs. As has been said before it is your car and your money and your risk. webbo
  10. My project, if I ever get my garage completely cleared, is Spilsby as it may have been in the late 50's and 60's, (had it not been for Beeching), it has been demolished and the only remaining part is the goods shed, (see disused_stations). I have different parts of it on the go, just need to get my act together and tie it all up. It will be 0gauge and hopefully be able to mate with the 0gauge modular group. I have all the OS maps and a good amount of photo's. With regard to Pete's (trisonic) message about the length of freight in the US, a friend of mine when on holiday near Detroit was stopped at a crossing for 1 1/2 hours waiting for 2 trains to pass. He had just got to the crossing when the lights came on, a freight started to come past, as the final wagons were passing another freight came the other way, if he was not a railway fan he would not have been amused, he told me it was near a freight yard. webbo

  15. I am a retired motor mechanic, my father was a fitter ‘darn t’pit’, he passed on to me his mechanical ability along with other working skills, when I was ready for leaving school his words to me were "if tha thinks tha guin darn t’pit thas another think cumin". I started work as a bound apprentice with a major Ford dealership in Sheffield. I in turn passed on my ability as a mechanic to my son, and my words to him were "don’t get in the motor trade it’s a low paid job for a skilled worker". What does he do? He gets into the motor trade working on HGV's and is now working for Scania UK, and it is well paid. I think we as parents pass on our skills, sometimes inadvertantly to our children, it all depends whether they are interested. webbo.
  16. I've just remembered the other saying my grandmother used a lot, "children should be seen and not heard". Also, she could bring you to tears with a glare, (it was one of those looks that could melt armour plating, only women seem to have it). But it was probably just me and my same aged cousins that brought the sayings and glares out of her. webbo

  23. Was we brung up proper? After sending in some of my childhood memories its time to get a bit serious. Yes I do think my generation (I was born 1946) was brung up proper. We did our best to obey the strict rules of society (didnt like them but!), we respected our elders (most of the time), at infant and junior school we learned the basics to take us forward to secondary schools, grammer schools and further education. We new our place in society. On a slightly lighter note I always remember one of my grandmothers (born 1877) saying "children should be seen and not heard", and when we went to her house we were never allowed to leave the table after a meal without asking permission, the front parlour was out of bounds for the children unless with an adult. We did live in a fairly strict society, but at least we were teenagers in the 60's and helped to change the face of music. webbo
