Hi Colin
Very sorry to hear about your trouble. I have been through a similar ( but not as severe ) situation and I would say the following:
You and Helen should be prepared to call in or go to the doctor whenever you think you need to, most doctors are very supportive especially nowadays where mental health is a hot topic, and often ones partner is willing to take advice from the doctor where they may not take it from you; also your idea of keeping yourself occupied is excellent, as it does mean that you are less likely to break down ( in my experience anyway ). I found it was important to look after myself because if I "let myself go" I couldn't look after my wife properly. I sounds a bit selfish at first but in the long run I found it did work. Another thing I did find that helped is that we both got enough sleep as it is a great healer.
I hope this is helpful.
Regards
Tim
