The main site, London Transport Service Vehicles has been around for years. A very interesting site.
That is my new favourite website, many thanks to those who have set it up, and of course a big thank you to Merfyn for saving and collecting the data in the first place!

J9627 of the tug is a great picture! Its a Lansing Bagnall TOER 4.2, all mod cons on that one even a wing mirror! The Royal mail ones seemed to always have cabs, the BR ones often didnt, the railwaymen must have been way more hardy!

The terrier was also used for dropsides, some had a hiab type crane on, and there were some box vans as well, and as said above lots of short wheelbase personnell carriers. Look out for the Railway motors group on flickr, with Merfyns pictures, and also a BR road vehicles group on facebook.

Thank you russ and Merfyn, so they are mostly J and K, which makes them the earlier mk 3. Some of Merfs pics from the flickr railway motors bible, show different hubcaps and roof rails etc, so probably a case is BR bought whatever was cheap and available, as long as they were yellow / white! Oh and merf, I sent you a Pm

I remember Astras with those wheels. I think they may have been part of the police spec as the local cop shop had a load of Astra hatchbacks with wheels like that but I don't think I ever saw them on a private car.
Now, I have a question please. Ref the Mk 3 astravan, as per the mainline one pictured earlier in the thread, does anyone know (Merfyn, Simon et all) if there were any that were yellow and carried NSE branding? I know that some carried BR branding, and also INTERCITY, and one of merfyns pics shows RR branding, but NSE anyone? Pictures of any Mk3 astras seem hard to find, so am hoping that someone may know!
I have a project in mind....

What a fabulous picture, in all the years I search on line for pictures of bruffs and recovery vehicles, I think this is the first I have seen of a bruff moving a rail vehicle!

This has been for sale on and off for a while, its not moved for many years, the owner has lived in it for over twenty years. Nothing much original left, and like has been said, parts are hard to find now, and yes, they rust like hell.

Only 55034 and trailer 56283 were painted white/blue.
The rest were blue/grey when refurbished.
I didn`t realise that 55034 carried white blue - when we repainted 55024 in maroon back in the day, I pressed for white/blue, but in retrospect that may not have been the best choice for a sandite car!

The roof bars were a B R design and bought in their thousands, fitted to all sorts of vans and always orange. Many B R vans had the grilles added, weather they carried gas bottles (propane) or not.
Ref the roof bars, does anyone have any drawings or know who they were made by? Eventually I`ll need a set for my escort van, or even a good picture and I can make some!
Cheers
Andy

That's the colour, ours was a van rather than a combi, I remember one boring weekend when I was on call giving it a cut and polish as we were EWS by then and it was our last BR lettered small van the others being unmarked white astras with gunmetal star of David 14in steel wheels which actually looked quite smart. The pway had some to the same spec and number series but looked even better in a bright yellow and BR markings. These were resprayed maroon and lettered up for Jarvis
Russ, were the astras the astra "f" shape, i.e. the rounded one? If so I have never seen a picture of that shape with BR markings, they ran from 1991 to 1998. I know a chap who has an ex BR S&T one in yellow that came with alloys. I had an ex gas board 1.7 diesel one, but the head gasket and head went, so I got rid.

Interesting that document specifies a BR primer and mentioned yellow paint but doesn't say what yellow
All BL stuff I believe was there own colour highway yellow but we had some mk5 escort Van's that was a ford colour and very lemon yellow not sure what Vauxhall or Chrysler used.
Not all vehicles were yellow my mate was fitter at colchester and they had a while maestro van.
At thornaby we had a blue metro and a few blue 309 cars that were also blue with red double arrows on the bottom of the drivers door. There was also a red chevan belonging to the DOME which was red and lettered as per small vans
Russ, it specifies warning yellow, but as you say, the maestros and freight rovers etc were highway yellow, the warning yellow is a bit more creamy. I think some of the coachbuilders used whatever bright yellow they had, ford summer yellow is almost identical to highway yellow, the escort combis and vans were the ford standard colour yellow, pale and didnt weather very well!

I think a lot of the positions were down to whome and where they were applied, and who could be bothered to get it right!
Like this one: (NMP and credit to who took it)

Some memories there! I think the photo of the miniature railway, the 7 1/4 gauge steam loco is "tiny", driven by i think the (must) be late Tony Challins, form the Harrow and Wembley Society of Model Engineers.

Love the Marylebone Pics, in C9582, the two trollies on the right, I reckon one of them became the depot trolley, "regs trolley", that could be the one in my back garden. The one being filmed, I think that might be ex works after a repaint into NSE, as there is no destination blind fitted and it looks very shiny!

Did you not do Paddington ODM?
Workshops on the 3rd floor of a building at the end of the elevated section of the Westway, above the old NCL depot.
Yes I did do pad ODM, thoroughly enjoyed every minute, I was earning something like £65 per week, and My dolomite 1850 used about £75 worth of petrol getting there, but it was worth it, I remember the basement full of rubbish and rats, the security guard who was the same every morning, but still wanted to see our ID cards every day!
Dave Vaughn was the supervisor, John Derby (rip) the storeman, I used to work with Kevin dare a lot.
Good Times!

And after all these years, and having been an apprentice at OOC ODM, i never knew it stood for out door machinery! i thought it was on depot maintenance, or latterly only do minimal....

When were Railtrack wagons rebranded to Network Rail
in UK Prototype Questions
Posted
As an aside to the wagons, there were some ex BR road vehicles that had Railtrack branding over the BR branding, such as astra vans etc - does anyone have a picture of any? I have trawled the ususal places but drawn a blank...
