  1. I suppose that their use on the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire under Army ownership gives them a certain amount of 'licence' for use on Col. Stephens-style light railways; more so perhaps than, say, the 42XX, Norwegian mogul and Crompton currently at the KESR (no criticism intended). I'm quite sure that if the Colonel had been around after the war he would have snapped up a couple of dozen of the things.

I think you are spot on. I have read a lot of the history of Colonel Stephens and his railways and had he lived and worked long enough he would certainly have been front of the queue for these locos and the mark 1 coaches on withdrawal too! I think that the KESR created a smashing light railway atmosphere by picking up bits and pieces in a stephens-like approach as opposed to trying the impossible of recreating what the KESR's trains looked like in its heyday. The KESR inspired my interest in Col. Stephens as well as prompting me to work there as a volunteer in my teens. Plus, austerities make lots of noise and smoke and make you smile:

  2. Nice one.

Glad you liked my shots. I'm sorry I cant help with the route of the MGR as this was far from my regular stomping ground. The only help I can give is that it was a wednesday morning. I had arrived on the sleeper from London, popped to Haymarket for a look at the newly introduced Glasgow-Edinburgh push pull trains, then up to Princes Street Gardens for these shots. They are posted here in time order so given that the MGR was the first shot at this location, probably around 930am. The strongest memory is how very cold it was! I did see a couple of brass monkeys pestering the local PWay crew for a loan of their welding gear..........

  3. Hi,

Thought some photos from January 1980 might get your creative juices flowing. Yes the white sleepers are covered with a very sharp frost!

With apologies for the quality (due to film deterioration and poor conditions on the day)

  4. Or how about taking a video camera and acting like the whole exhibition was set up for you to practice your cameramanship rather than for people to enjoy the models. You could stand with your elbows sticking out at eye level and try to dominate a 180 degree arc to pan your shots of every passing train. Be careful though because apart from getting lynched people might just notice in the viewfinder over your shoulder that not only are you a pain in the a**se but you also have no idea how to operate the camera either!!!!

  5. Happy new year all, back with a new year bump. Thank you all for your helpful replies, and yes Colin that photo you have of the 33 on tankers would be of interest thanks.

So I have been wondering which direction did the Hazells and magazines traffic take, I presume it was London bound?

Not being familiar with railway practice, would the wine tanks and coal wagons have been shunted down to the reception sidings separately or in one trip.

Any takers on the destination of the polybulk, surely it must be the 'wine factory'?

Lastly...for now, where would any engineers wagons have come from, I gather Aylesbury was allocated to the LMS and as such LMS wagon types would be the order of the day?

    cheers Barry
