Soot is impure carbon particles resulting from the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. It is more properly restricted to the product of the gas-phase combustion process, but is commonly extended to include the residual pyrolysed fuel particles such as coal, charred wood and petroleum coke, and so on, that may become airborne during pyrolysis and that are more properly identified as cokes or chars. By adding a "y" to the end it is magically transmogriified into a harmless glove puppet.
I can believe that even though you lost me after incomplete combustion..........
Have to say both your loco's look stunning, excellent examples of both methods

It's another one of those subjects that polarises opinions, I think Chris is absolutely right but airbrushes are the tool of choice for me when weathering track or misting over buildings. I find it gives a degree of consistency if you use a very light touch........
Now I shall wait for the smelly stuff to hit the air rotating device........

Compensation beam needs adjusting, they obviously struggled to get 0-4-4s balanced as well...
My G5 doesnt do that.......but there again it does have about 3lbs of lead in it........maybe its a southern thing

I assume the bottom pic is actually OK but it looks like a 70s motor with the rear end jacked up a la Arseky & Crutch!!!

Just be careful what you tie a knot in.........

Borrowing? There would be a fee - OH HANG ON - would this come under the heading of "immoral earnings"?
If she can find all the bits I've dropped and lost she would be worth every penny of those "immortal earnings"..........see what I did there??

That is excellent news, I'm sure everyone wishes him all the very best

Yep no 2 for me is the best overall compromise

What about some type of micro switch arrangement which would trigger a warning light so you could see where everything is??
-
My god that is sooo tidy how do you do it???
My railway room always looks like a bomb has gone off in there

What a fantastic job they have made of your Fowler, it really looks the part

Just re-read this from the beginning (cos I heard Chad was coming out and was looking for some clues!!) and have really enjoyed it. Fantastic stuff Chaz, you should be immensely proud of what you have done

That's really helpful, thanks. I have been looking at Zimo chips as they seem to be a good compromise between quality and price. I am currently trying to fit some caps to my Hudswell Clarke, will let you know how I get on

Hi Chaz,
Sadly I couldn't make Telford this year but looks like you has a good time there. Am interested in your point re stay alives, I too have come to the same conclusion (guessing for the same reasons short wheelbase locos don't like the slightest bit of dirty track etc) and was wondering which chips you are going for??

Yes they look great, but leave me with a sense of it's not fair yours is bigger than mine I think its called buffer envy

Has to be said I am really enjoying following this thread, truly inspirational stuff and on a shoestring too. Leaves me sorely tempted but with two other projects on the go and two completed layouts shed/loft/garage space is at a bit of a premium, of course the house next door is empty.........mmmmm, I wonder.......

Yep, enjoyed the article, in fact it was Reely Grate

Mark,
Well done for sorting that out.
I allowed for this sort of impatience when I created the sound project. Lol
If you are in a hurry, press F5 (latched) before engaging F1. This will cut out the start-up routine entirely; the engine will be running in 'Light Engine' idle. (release F5 to switch back to 'Heavy Train' mode before driving off if you have something on the hook).
Time to study the 'User Notes' again?
Kind regards.
Paul
So when all else fails Read the instructions??

Really enjoying this but have to highlight my disappointment with the content given the thread title!!!

I have to agree, there is a real sense of satisfaction when yo complete a joint that's nice and clean and bright........makes all the cock ups fade away (for a little while anyway!!)

Great start and looking good already, just remember slow and steady wins the race and if you're not sure just ask.....there's plenty of folk out here who will be more than happy to help, oh and remember to enjoy it, it is a hobby after all...

Am loving the video guys, more please

Impressive stuff building your own, I have to say mine is a London Road Models one & is probably my favourite piece of kit, it's fantastic for all those awkward overlay and laminating jobs but you do need to think about the build sequence

As Ray says, turning the loco has no effect in DCC land. Forward is always forward......
