  1. Old post but if anyone out there still needs Louvres let me know. I can do 3D print as per the pictures

PM for more details or find me on Facebook: Hornby Class 50 Exchange

A way around this is to remove the couplings, complete as a unit with the NEM boxpockets, waggler, and dovetail from the coupling mounts by levering them gently out at the dovetail the coupling mounts, and putting them aside.  Then remove the coupling mounts (the bit of plastic with the dovetail recess,) by unscrewing them from the wagon floor, and put them in your spares box.  You can now replace the mounts with Parkside PA34 coupling mounts, designed for their kits but made of soft plastic so that they can easily be trimmed or packed to hold the coupling at your standard height.   They simply glue to the wagon floor, and you will have some wobble room in the exact postitioning which may be useful in reducing the gaps between the buffers if your curvature allows it, or increasing them if your curvature doesn't allow it...  Replace the coupling 'complete unit'; the dovetail simply pressfits into the recess on the PA34 mount; if it is loose a drop of glue will secure it.

PA34s are available from Peco dealers, in a pack of 10, sufficient for 5 vehicles for less than a fiver.

If only there was a standard coupling that could be used on all 4mm scale RTR stock!  Different manufacturers use different materials and different hook and bar proflles, and Bachmann use 4 different types within their own range, all within NEM specification and allegedly compatible with each other; yeah. right...

    Thank you very much.

  3. Afternoon,

I am not sure if anyone has noticed but  37-576, 37-576A, 37-576B, 37-576C & 37-576D don't all have uniform coupling so if you have a mixed rake you will find that the coupling heights differ.

This is causing me a bit of a headache when shunting,

Wagons 37-576A (5961), 37-576B (5955) & 37-576D (6758) appear to have a drop down lower coupling with some sort of spacer between the chassis and NEM.

Wagon 37-576 (57575) does not have this spacer and causes height issues when joining with the others.

Unfortunately i don't own any 37-576C (5969) so can check, but looking at pictures online it appears they also have the spacer?

Does anyone have any feedback on how i can cure this issue so the couplings all line up correctly?

Also on the NEM's there appears to be mixed numbers of 1,2,3 and 4...What are these reference too?

    Hi

Its here Link to click    Scroll down a little and you will see the difeerence in wiring colours between Hornby and Peco surface solinoid motors (Peci colours are the same as Gaugemaster PM20 and Rails versions too) and further down the basic CDU wiring etc.

As suggested, if at all possible avoid the Peco CDU (Unless Peco have amended theirs it lacks the needed punch!).  Obtain one from Gaugemaster, Blocksignalling or even eBay. :D

    Thank you Brian

Sorry, that wiring detail is not correct for a PL11.

On the Peco PL11 surface mounting motor the following wiring colours are used....

Red and Black are the two operation wires (Left & Right)

The Green wire is the return.

You can see the typical wiring of most styles of solenoid point motors on my web site.My web sites point motor wiring Scroll down a little to see the PL11 wiring diagram.

You should only use a momentary style of switch. Hornby R044, Peco PL26, Sprung to centre off toggle switches etc. Or use non locking press to make push buttons (2 per point) or even stud and probe selection.

Ideally a Capacitor Discharge Unit(CDU) is used too, as these provide an increased pulse of power to the solenoid motor(s) and help prevent coil burn out should a switch accidentally remain in the 'On' position for too long! Only one CDU is normally needed for the whole layout. If you want to operate three or more solenoids from one switch operation then consider obtaining a Heavy Duty CDU which can provide a pulse for up to 6 or more solenoids at once. :)

Hi Brian, Sorry to jump on an ancient post, do you still have the wiring diagram? I’m sure I’m doing it right but there doesn’t seem to be enough “umph” to throw the points. I have got a CDU to install tomorrow to see it that makes any difference. Also is it better to remove the point springs?

  6. Hi All, Sorry to jump on an old post but what would you all recommend for a “modern” chassis so it can be chipped? I seen online some used a vi trains class 37 chassis and mentions of a Hornby DCC Ready Chassis but unsure what class the Hornby one would come from. I’m sure I’ve also seen a while back someone recommended Bachmann Class 25 chassis but needed some modifications. It was a while ago so could be getting mixed up with another project.

Sadly Class 50 spare steps are non -existent...and they are the first to disappear...

Not exactly accurate, Precision Labels do 3D prints and they are excellent.

edit - apologies I just realised this has already been mentioned and you are aware. Please ignore.

Just wondering if anyone out there has a Hornby Class 50 cab, cab front or damaged body with an intact cab?

Got is out of the project box yesterday and cut the front off to repair another 50, but fancy fixing this body up.

Drop me a PM if you can help . . .

Lima or 1980’s style buffers can fit very well.

Also Replica Railways sell coach buffers new for pennies.

Thank you I will go and check them out

Does anyone have a set of nameplates for 73126 'Kent and East Sussex Railway' made by LFC in 4mm please?

    Thank you in advance

Hi Graham, Have you tried Railtec transfers? He does some fantastic 3D nameplates

Carpet monster 1 me 0. Has anyone got a right hand side (as you face the loco) bufferbeam step for the Hornby class 50? It's the one with a shorter horizontal top.

    Here's hoping....it's not my 50....

    Cheers Andy

Hi Andy, Precision 3D do a set of 4 for around £4-£5 plus postage

I quite like Jamie Goodmans Class 50 on Loksound. I also like YouChoos on Zimo, but these are cheap and cheerful models so getting cheap and cheerful chips lol. Yes I saw that recommendation tooo - its a good idea!

I think overall the TTS sound file for the CL 50 is better than YouChoos offering.

  13. Evening all,

I would like to have some Bachmann MK2A's repainted into South Wales and West (Blue) to reflect the Cardiff-Bristol Temple Meads-Weymouth service in the late 1990's which was hauled by Class 37’s.

I have been asked to provide the type face, font and size of the logos? Would anyone be able to help provide this or point me in the right direction?

I guess the numbers would be a standard size? Is there also a equivalent shade of readily available paint would be a good match? Regional Railways dark blue has been suggested but wanted to ask :)

    thanks in advance

Not sure if these are what you are looking for. As you can see, although there are 3 pantographs, there are only a total of 4 insulators. If it is a current Hornby/Lima model, then I have few Hornby insulators that you are welcome to.

PM me if I can be of assistance.
