This may sound a bit heartless but I have learned over the last year that my mental health is important for me and my family and I have had a few restless nights since the news worrying about the situation which I can do nothing about.

    Thanks again and best wishes.

You are going do any favours to anyone by damaging your own health to no good end. Stand back and let it sink in.

I had the same person call me three times on my mobile the other day.  The first time I didn't manage to answer it in time, so they would have got my voicemail greeting in which I clearly state my name (assuming that they listened/paid attention to it).  They rang again a minute two later and seemed surprised that Wayne wasn't available (that not being my name).  When I told them they had called the wrong number they just hung up.  They then called again a few minutes later, which I didn't bother answering.  After that they did seem to give up but such behaviour does make me wonder exactly how thick some people can be at times.

When we first moved in to our current house we had a spate of calls for one of the local livery stables.  IIRC the cause in that case was that one of the umpteen "local directory" type web sites* had published an incorrect number for the business.  It was surprising how many people (a) refused to believe that the number on the web site was wrong, and (b) seemed to think that it was my responsibility to get it put right.  The calls did dry up in the end.

AFAIK if you find yourself continually pestered by wrong numbers - which I can imagine would be annoyingly frequent in the case of a single digit confusion with a GP surgery - then you can ask your telephone service provider to get involved to try to find a solution.  This would most likely involve one or other party getting a new number, which even for a residential user could be more than a little inconvenient (although I believe the telco should be able to put an automatic redirection from your old number in place for a transitional period).

    * I have never understood the reason for these sites existing in these days of Google/Bing/DuckDuckGo, especially since most of them seem to be little more than a minimal 'scrape' of Yellow Pages or the like, with most of the entries having a "if this is your business please get in touch" flag.  For those of a more mid-twentieth-century mindset, BT still maintains the actual telephone directory, and makes it available online (and I believe it has a statutory duty to do so).

O keep getting calls asking for a Wain Bedford, now if I get a call from a number I don't recognise I let it ring out then if I can be bothered look up the number, most times it's a spam call.

  3. I have some Slaters plastikard bought over 30 years ago that is as good as when bought, and have some plasticicard bought 5 years ago that is unusable. Which indicates a different formulation, the Slaters version was an ICI product, where does it come from now? is the question.

  4. This is a complete shock. Always enjoyed Andrew's pithy remarks. A big hole has appeared in the ranks of ER'S  Condolences to Andrew's family & friends

Right well a lot has happened in the last 48 hours.

Majorly, I got my first car.

This 2003 Land Rover Discovery SE, which thankfully has nothing major wrong with it. I’m very pleased with it, I’ve wanted a Land Rover since I was nine and never expected one to be my first car.

I was also gifted this today as an early birthday gift by my aunt and grandfather, a Georgian writing lap desk to accompany the drawing set. As they live in NZ it was more convenient to buy something here than in NZ and have it shipped here. It’s a very nice thing, and a I spent several hours making it look presentable again. The only big missing bit is the diamond shaped mother of pearl inset around the lock which I will either replace with brass or ivory.

A friend of mine has made a pretty good living over the years buying and restoring these cases. Nice wheels.

  6. A friend of mine found out the hard way that trying to catch a bull by his ring with his middle finger was not a good idea. Apart from the phantom pain he said that picking eggs up was weird, it felt like his finger was inside the egg.

I am feeling old today, my eldest Son  Kieran reaches 18 tomorrow I don't know where the time has gone. Doesn't seem like 2 minutes since I was stuck in the hospital for nearly 40 hours of labour that the Mrs went through before having an emergency C section.

In the blink of an eye they are grown and gone.......

We used a mix and lay service Mixamate iirc for a shed base at my parents house 20 years or so ago. We had pre shuttered and a mate got me some rebar. They turned up with a truck with a pile of sand on and bags of cement the guy just did all the mixing we just barrowed it round the back.

It didnt work out too bad price wise compared with buying the sand gravel cement and hiring a mixer. The pour was done in one go and saved a load of time.

A lot of the readymix guys have a minimum order due to computerized batching mixing concrete to various British Standards

The pre-mix companies will send part loads, but they charge for the full load. If you have a suitable container you can go and collect from the plant. The little 4 wheel trucks that you see buzzing around with capacities of 2 or 3 metres charge for 6 metres.
