  1. Hello Lee,

The Biomass's are progressing but some more development work is required to get the end detail to print better, also the axles have been on order for over a month and are still a no show.

(Anyone know where you can get large stocks of Romford axles?)

Also to answer James's post before, I think it is unlikely that I will do any complete multiple units for a good while (in hope that costs will fall soon and my design skill will improve), also any units would have to have a suitable RTR chassis available. If I could draw one, a 325 parcels unit would be a good one to fit those Bachmann 150 chassis's that are going cheap.

However I have plenty of projects lined up before then.

    Wild Boar Fell

    Awesome cheers mate :)

    Any pics?

  2. Finally here are those photos I promised.

First up is the 1st test print (bottom) which due to the drawings I was working from being scaled wrongly were about 4mm too short. This has been corrected and locking points have been added and test printed this morning (top). I have further updated this design and created the FGA, but printer trouble today has thwarted all attempts to print it.

As can be seen some wisps still need cleaning off it, and a little cleaning up but I am happy with how it has worked.

On the Biomass front, I must thank Lee (HSTFAN13) for suggesting this project as it is proving great fun, I now have 9 bodyshells produced (2 prototypes and 7 production ones). But the printer failure has prevented me from printing the last one for my rake. Once I have some Dapol couplings I will get the chassis locked down and then I can actually run them. An initial quote for transfer is turning me towards doing them in the as delivered scheme of plain grey with data panels.

    attachicon.gif102_1500.JPG

Please note that they haven't warped, that is distortion in my camera (I have checked).

Edit: Forgot to add that since the first print the surface quality of the sides has improved drastically, meaning the sides only need about 5 minutes work each an only a little filler and filing. The roof doors do need filler however due to the stepping.

Still plenty more fish in the sea where projects are concerned.

    Wild Boar Fell

Both FFA/FGA and Drax biomass wagons look amazing :)

  3. Now, apparently, molten steel wouldn't be transferred like this as the teeming ladle would be moved from the electric arc furnace, by gantry crane within the same building, to the foundry. But my excuse is the buildings are seperated by the canal so I've used my modeller's licence to have molten steel transferred by rail.

    attachicon.gifRiver-Don-Works-015.jpg

The teeming ladle is freelance, based on general photos, and scratchbuilt from plasticard and a lid from some household goods or other and a thing that once contained Slaters 7mm couplings. The bogie is freelance but loosely based on one that carried a charging clam at Brown Bayley's works - again built from plasticard. The buffers are turned brass and were rescued from an old wagon. The ladle is, of course, removable from the bogie.

Saw this http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2006/11/10/a-ladle-on-a-bogey-on-its-way-to-british-steel-at/ thought you might be interested

  4. Finally found a pic that (I think) shows the difference in front yellow panels - It may just be the lighting, but I'm fairly convinced.

70801 with a nice bright warning panel and 70805 in the background with the paler yellow, similar to the Freightliner 70's

    Cheers,

Would 70801 have a different warning panel colour as it was painted in the uk and the others was painted at the factory in the us

    Just a thought

  5. Quoted from the departmentals page

    'Previously W 14065, a Mk.2A BFK.'

I posted that earlier but then reread the OP and worked out that intercity 125 is looking for locos that pulled this coach so I deleted my original post saying that it was a MK2a coach

  6. There is now another variant of DBS CGA biomass hopper - 310604 - It's a new body on a HTA chassis. looking very fifferent from a HTA, as it now has vertical instead of sloping ends and new bogies.

There is a picture on the demu forum and I can't copy it here I'm afraid, but here's the DBS press release.

    Cheers,

    Mick

Thanks mick :) I didn't know about that one.

Does anyone have a picture as I can't find one online?:(

  7. Hello Lee,

I am still investigating options for printing it but hopefully it can be done for about 40 or just under, including Bachmann bodies (without axles). One of the well known printing companies quoted me approximately £90 for the print due to its size and physical volume (60cm^3 of plastic approx) and I guess the other big company will cost about the same. I will post progress with the drax hopper when I know more. I see that there is also another prototype Biomass hopper now too, the smaller DB owned CGA capable of holding 100cm^3 of biomass, lets see if they catch on first.

    Wild Boar Fell

    Hi

Many thanks for your reply, I will be buying some when there done :)

Yes the CGA is converted from HTA coal Hoppers the first one was done in 2007 I think and the second one with different roof doors was done in 2012/13 and freightliner has one biomass wagon converted from a HHA wagon.

Maybe you could make just the roof doors(with opening rams) for Bachmann HTA/HHA wagons?

  8. I remember as a kid being dissapointed at not winning the competition on Blue Peter to press the plunger to blow-up the cooling towers at Croydon A. The event was filmed by the BBC, so there might be something on youtube and such like that might show you the surrounding buildings etc.?

Are you sure it's croydon A? As Croydon A had wooden cooling towers and it closed in 1976 and croydon B had Concrete Cooling Towers and it closed in 1984 but wasn't taken down until 1991

  9. A very good guess indeed!

It really is a big beast, as the body itself will use the same amount of plastic as one of my containers. It is currently split into 3 major sections: roof, body and chassis and is being designed to accept the correct Bachmann TF25 bogies. A few other parts like buffer heads and mounting pins will be separately printed items.

A similar perspective showing the other major components.

I see your making a drax biomass hopper now

Look forward to buying some any idea on price?

  10. Hey,

Just read though and I see you need help with the water tender, 60019 water tender was 4472 flying Scotsman water tender and if you type 'flying Scotsman water tender' in google you should find pictures, also on 'BBC Archives' website there's a video of flying Scotsman replicating a non stop run to edingburgh and in this video it's shows the water tender from the top looking at the water filling point.

    Hope this helps,

  11. Hi HSTFan13,

I'm afraid I don't have any plans to scale them up at the moment. To be honest I think I would struggle to scale them up and make them work correctly, as I don't have any OO stock for reference (bogies, buffer heights, couplings). Then there are the technical problems as you can't just scale up the drawings, you need to change the wall depths and may have to put more strengthening into the wagon to make sure it prints correctly.

It may be worthwhile having a chat with 'Wild Boar Fell' on this forum, as he produces some very nice looking 3D printed OO wagons.

    Cheers, Mark.

Cheers, many thanks for your reply :)

I have asked wild boar models and he said he might in the future

  12. Hi,

Just a quick update as I've been making some more progress with the IIA-D. I've put the hydraulic lifting gear on the wagon ends to open the roof doors and mocked up a chassis with the tipping doors. Still lots to do, but getting there.

    attachicon.gifBiomass Wagon.jpg

Also had a note from shapeways, the KFA has printed (hopefully it doesn't look like a melted curly wurly) along with the test prints for the FEA-B bogies in WSF. I was hoping to get the FEA-B too, but that was rejected for having a wall under 0.6mm.

    Cheers, Mark.

Any plans to scale up to OO Gauge the Drax IIA-D and Ecofret Wagons?
